Split this with my cousin yesterday for Christmas, having heard about this brewery but having never tried this before. I found the idea of this interesting and after having this beer, my intrigue was fully satisfied. While I've had Stouts that were much better than this, the alcohol was well recessed and the egg nog just present enough that this turned out to be unlike anything that I ever had before. In a crowded world of craft beer, those are great traits to rave about!

The pour to this was as to be expected - dark, a bit thin, and with a fairly frothy tan head. Not a lot of lacing to be seen either but the thinness of this beer was the reason behind that. A good amount of egg nog in the nose, which was present in the taste as well. There was quite a bit of vanilla extract behind that, as well as gingerbread and milk chocolate. A good amount of carbonation led to a nice mouthfeel that allowed for the sweetness to fade relatively easily. A hint of brown sugar was present here and although some reviewers thought this was like a creme brulee, this wasn't quite that strong.

However, this certainly was drinkable. The alcohol was mild for a Stout and hardly detectable as I made my way through this. A bit of cinnamon of lactose might have put this over the top but as is, this was a great way to celebrate the holiday. In a season full of beers of this style, this didn't stand above many of those but certainly stood out from them. A must-try for anyone looking for something enjoyable, easygoing, and dark.

A - A tad more than a finger's worth of slightly late to develop audibly fizzy dark khaki / brown colored head... Minimal retention gives way to a lopsided veil of lacing and moderate collar... Mostly still with just a few stray moderate paced carbonation bubbles seen towards to the top of the glass... The collar is a dark brown that lets a limited bit of light leak in around the edges...

S - A unique and interesting head... An initial burst of nutmeg and cinnamon... If one closes their eyes, then nose isn't too far off from that of actual eggnog... Some light ginger notes as well... Some light pie crust...

T - The spices again dominate on the palate... Slightly beneath the initial spice burst is some roasted malts and dark chocolate notes... Ginger snap cookies... Creme Brulee caramelized shell... The spices intensify again on the finish...

M - Medium bodied... Lightly carbonation... Deep roasted character... Slightly creamy... Fairly uneventful...

D - I love some of the unique brews that Spring House turns out, but this one misses the mark a tiny bit... In total it's a little less then the sum of its parts... A very unique offering that is certainly worthy of trying for the curious, but not quite something I would call a must try or something that I would revisit...
