Putting a bizarre twist on the holiday cheer, the typical notions of sugarplums dancing in our heads, stockings were hung with care, and rose with a clatter is replaced by, "Welp, there goes Santa. The martians got 'em!" At least we have an eggnog stout to help us through.

As "The Martians Kidnap Santa" pours, its stout-like underpinnings are noticed right off. Dark brown, the beer appears black through the center but casts dark bronze low lights about its edges. As a patient rise of foam caps the beer, its retention is creamy though it lasts only half the session, leaving minimal lace on the glass as it falls.

Bold stout aromas fill the nose with the typical roasted character of coffee, cocoa and burnt toast; yet there's something different lurking behind. A highly nutmeg-rich scent comes forth and brings with it whiffs of cinnamon, allspice and light clove. A cream-scented undertow seems of vanilla, suntan lotion and pina colada.

Then on the palate, the taste buds are allured by the vanilla, creamy, nutmeg and cinnamon- rounding out the dream of eggnog. But there's a stout underneath it all and it won't be denied. Dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, roasted nuts and charred toast all play into its robust taste. Burnt toffee provides the malty foundation for all those flavors and grounds them well, even as the ale fades into a semi-sweet finish with a moderate bitterness that seems to come from burnt pine.

Sweet and creamy to the tactile sensations, the beer's lush start is sweet and silky, but as the carbonation is expelled, its residual sweetness lingers in sticky fashion even as the ale's alcohol warmth rises and brings out those eggnog-type spices.

Certainly not an everyday beer, its seasonal showing is very much welcome. The influence of nutmeg is quite evident to its taste as it doesn't go overboard in trying to achieve such artificial flavor. Oddly, most sips and I taste a spicy stout, but every now and then a random sip will strike the palate as overt eggnog- surprising, yet odd.

Thanks Kirb for sharing this growler with me. Pours black in color with 3 fingers of brown creamy head. A full wall lace sticks to the glass. Overall, the brew looks solid.

The aroma is surprisingly different from what I expected. It opens with a big juniper character like pine, menthol and herbs. Some hops and roast/nutmeg/cinnamon evolve with coffee and baker's chocolate towards the back.

The taste is bitter roast with an additional hop bitterness tasting like pine. Some spice like juniper is also present with an earthy char and tobacco flavor with bitter baker's cocoa and coffee. This kinda tastes like a christmas wreath candle smells...

This is a medium to light bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It fit's the bill for nearly every other stout base that Spring House makes, meaning it is pleasantly over-roasty, bitter and thin. I think the whole "egg nog" portion of this is lost. Instead of being egg nog inspired, its more like christmas wreath with heavy pine character. Worth a try to say you had it but I would most likely pass on having this again.

22oz bomber, presumably from 2013; generously sent as an extra by FleetwoodMatt. Poured into an unlabeled snifter today, 2/6/2014.

App- Dark black body, typical of an imperial stout. Mocha head, about one finger's worth, good retention, not much lacing.

Smell- Nutmeg bomb. Chocolates and roasts are subtle beneath the nutmegs. Interesting but I'm not a big fan.

Flavour- Smell is better than the taste here. Lots of nutmeg, not quite as much of the base imperial stout. Not much actual eggnog here.

Mouthfeel- Creamy, medium bodied, but not particularly interesting. Solid carbonation. Aftertaste is nutmeg.

Overall- Decent beer, nothing special. I don't know where the eggnog is coming from, but I certainly don't get it as much. Lots and lots of nutmeg, though so if you like that, this could be up your alley.
