A really well done coffee stout from Springhouse. I was worried at first considering I haven't been a fan of their other beers, but this one really wows me. Huge coffee nose with roasted malts and dark chocolate. Flavor is a blast of coffee, some roasted malts, dark chocolate, a touch of licorice, and a nice cacao sweetness.
Mouthfeel is silky smooth with just enough carbonation to carry the flavors through. Well done, Springhouse.

Bottle shared by a generous soul - thanks to whoever you are.

Pours one shade from black with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of robust coffee on top of more coffee. Roasted malt aromas and unsweetened chocolate aromas are present as well but the coffee is in charge.

Tastes good. Roasted malt flavors with hints of char kick things off and are almost immediately overtaken by roasted coffee flavors. The roasted malt flavors fall out midway through the sip, leaving coffee and light char to carry through to a solidly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is OK. It's a bit on the thin side with moderate carbonation.

Drinakbility is good. I finished my glass and could have another without any problems.

Overall the nose on this beer is very nice however the flavor profile just wasn't fleshed out as well as I'd hoped. Still, this is a very good coffee beer that's worth a shot.

Poured from a 22oz bottle to a 14oz snifter.

Appearance: Removing the cap from the bottle produces a loud pop! The contents quickly attempts to erupt from the bottle. Luckily just covering the top keeps the contents at bay. A slow pour is required to keep the foamy head in check. Pours dark black with a puffy fluffy mahogany head.

Smell: Very little coffee, odd tart cherry aromas overwhelm everything else.

Taste: The flavors follow the nose. A little bit of coffee and roasted malt are quickly over powered by tart cherry and a slightly metallic taste. Finishes very acidic.

Mouthfeel: Over carbonated and thin.

Overall: This bottle is clearly infected. I've been wanting to try this for quite a while, but this was a real let down. I hope I get the chance to revisit this with a better batch.

Poured from bottle into CBS Snifter. Huge carbonation on this, loosely connected brown tan fluffy head. Almost a gusher. After getting it into the glass, its a rich black color, the tan head remaining floats around the top of the glass. Smell- roasted malt, espresso, chocolate. A weird tart whiff...marachino cherries? strange to be in this beer. Taste- stingy carbonation, the espresso and roasty notes are there, but so is an off tart flavor. Uh oh...I think we might have an infection here. The mouthfeel and stingy carbonation is a major detractor from this beer's appeal, and the tart presence bothers me. Other than that, this is a decent take on a coffee beer.

A: Pours practically black with a very large tan colored head. Upon opening the growler, the carbonation caused a little bit of an overflow. Nice retention and lacing.

S: Tons of coffee beans and coffee grounds. There is a little bit of underlying roasted malt and a little chocolate, but the coffee dominates the aroma.

T: Similarly coffee forward. Not quite as strong as the aroma, but the coffee still dominates the flavor profile, a combination of grounds and beans. A little bit of chocolate, but like the aroma, the coffee dominates.

M: Medium bodied, maybe a tad thin, but moderate carbonation.

Spring House- Planet Bean

A- Deep dark brown with a small filmy creamy tan head. Small 1 ring of lacing.
S- Fresh medium to dark roast coffee beans. Very pungent, amazing!
T- Sweet black coffee. Deep dark roasted beans. Fresh and strong coffee.
M- Like most others around here this was a bit thin and watery. Very little bitterness or astringency. Sweet sugary but a bit watery.

Overall- Amazing aroma and good fresh bean flavor. Find this 1.

A: Dark Black with a fluffy mocha colored head that was over an inch thick, retained quite well and left very good lacing

S: Serious coffee smell that was pretty sweet with a nice bit of roastiness and some milk chocolate notes.

T: Very coffee forward and nicely balanced between sweetness and bitterness. Also some milk chocolate and mocha notes.

M: There is a slight bit of chalkiness but there is no booze and it is nicely creamy.

D: I split the growler with two other people and think i could have had pleny more. It is not heavy and just goes down real fast

From a growler purchased at the brewery. Into an oversized tulip glass.

Pours the exact color of a coffee bean. Black with a brownish sheen to it. 2 fingers of rich and creamy mocha colored head sit on top, which bottoms out into a spotty layer of foam. This fires up immediately when swirled into a nearly 3/4 finger of rigid retention that just doesn't quit, leaving a frothy latticework of light tan lacing that just drenches the sides of the glass. Hot damn, this looks delicious! Like an iced coffee in my glass! Good god, the aroma is just buzz inducing, with espresso character that completely dominates the nose. Fortunately it doesn't overdo it though, with a back layer of slightly astrigent (and a bit smokey) roasted notes and a fairly supportive dose of sweetness that's definitely there but isn't readily distinguisable at first because of all that rich coffee character. Head brewer Matt Keasey used the cold-seeping technique to get his coffee extract and it really shows it here in the aroma. Just fabulous!

The taste pretty much brings the same awesomeness to the table. Maybe not quite as in-your-face as the aroma but still pretty darn great. Just layers upon layers of acrid espresso, roasted bitterness, and underlying chewy chocolate sweetness that coats the mouth. Roasted grains and coffee just LINGER long and loud on the palate with a steady dry bitterness that has my mouth begging for a sip of water between gulps of this spectacular java infused Stout! The mouthfeel is full bodied and creamy in the mouth, with carbonation that has a stiff prickly feel to it at times (that helps bring out all of those roast and coffee accents) yet still maintains an overall soft feel as well. And this stuff is 7%? Get the F' out! This went down about as smooth as can be.

Hands down, thee best locally produced Coffee Stout that I've ever had and this one ranks right up there at the top with the best that I've ever had period! Not bad for a first time effort from a brewer that "just wanted to get one more Stout out before spring started". Awesome.

Growler provided by a great BA, Akorsak. Served in a Pint Glass at an annual Christmas Party.

A: Looks like black coffee in my glass, a portent perhaps? Half a finger of Mocha head that vanishes fairly fast. Not much lacing going on.

S: Mega blast of intense roasted, bitter black coffee. Insanely potent to the point that you question, is it really beer in my glass???

T: First sip is as quoted from my friend "A punch in the face from Juan Valdez." That is pretty spot on, but I'd also add an intense burning from the bitterness on the finish. After a few more sips it starts to become very enjoyable. This beer is really all about the coffee. Next to the big roastiness, espresso and chocolate flavors are the most noticeable. Easily the most coffee forward beer I've ever had. Could be a little more balanced with more chocolate flavors, but that'd most likely detract from what makes this brew so unique.

M: Medium bodied. Carbonation was very spot on, but I would have liked the beer to be a bit thicker.

D: Seeing how I took down about half a growler of this in an evening, I'd say it's pretty drinkable. The 7% ABV is hardly noticeable, and the biggest drawback is the harsh bitterness from the coffee.

Before trying Planet Bean, I'd heard how crazy the coffee was in this stout. Turns out the hype lived up in this case as this is the most coffee intense beer I've ever had. This is a delight for coffee stout fans (and probably most coffee drinkers I'd assume).

A firkin of Planet Bean with vanilla beans at Al's of Hampden. Jwiss and Stormking were lurking, harassing the pups...

A: The stout is appropriately black, a darkness that is at once comforting and forboding. A thin, cask-y head can along and was quickly gone.

S: The nose is the richest, smoothest coffee around, an aromatic wonderland punctuated by sweet vanilla beans. A nice ale to sniff.

T: The vanilla is stronger than I was expecting, able to deftly overpower most of the rich coffee base. That coffee, normally a bright intense dose, is more restrained, having been soothed out in the firkin. Still good, the coffee lacks something that the vanilla is glad to fill in for. The underlying stout is still mild, a nice take on the regular stout style.

M: The vanilla stands out, perhaps more than it should. Good news is that it doesn't turn the ale into a sugary wasteland. There is still plenty of Planet Bean goodness to supplement the vanilla beans.

I came to Al's for the IPA Good Friday and instead started off with an American stout. Yes, it's that good.

Before I can even get to the review, I have to note that this cork is toughest that I've encountered... That's not a knock nor a compliment, just an observation...

A - An active cascading pour gives way to two plus fingers worth of brown chunky and slightly rocky head with modest retention that gives way to a full rich frothy lace... Opaque abyss black color... Trace amounts of lacing clings to the glass...

S - It should come as no surprise the the coffee dominates the nose, and while its quite potent I expected slightly more... The coffee scent is reminiscent of a cup of french pressed dark roast.. Also present are some very faint hints of roasted malt and even fainter hints of dark chocolate...

T - The intense coffee flavor dominates the palette... Some roasted malt and a touch of licorice rise on the finish..

M - Terrific... Lush and creamy... Medium to full bodied... Just the slightest touch of carbonation... A little on the thin side, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing in this case...

D - One of the most insanely quaffable stouts that I've ever encountered... Remarkably smooth, especially given the intensity of the coffee components... Even more impressive is that this offering comes from microbrewery host in a barn in Amish country... This one gets bonus points for that...

Dark as night, with a nice mocha-esque head.

Dark, roasted coffee jumps out at you, with some chocolate, and roasted malty notes.

Taste is very much coffee forward, but unfortunately, thats the bulk of what I can get from it..nothing really else. While the coffee taste is great, a one-pump-chump does not a great beer make. Aside from a slightly bitter finish, complex is far from a descriptor here.

Even for merely an American stout, the body is a bit thin and lacking, though creamy.

Smelled wonderful, lacked in complexity, and overall wouldn't seek out again. Glad the bottle was shared.

Growler to pint glass, filled by the brewer at the barn.

A: Jet black and COMPLETELY opaque, even when held up to light. Anywhere between an average and a large head, depending on your pour. Frothy, a little creamy and an uneven rocky cap with various peaks here and there. The head lasts fairly long and eventually reduces to a film where most of the bubbles build up along the edge of the glass. After an aggressive pour, it is a real treat to watch the head settle. The darker, denser bubbles play "plinko" as they bounce around and fall down in between the lighter colored bubbles.

S & T: First place goes to the freshly brewed, roasted coffee aromatics. They are up front and in your face. Honorable mention goes to the caramel and chocolate chip cookie malt backbone. The sweet malts are huge but out-duelled. The hops are almost non existent but the resin does pull through. Both the smell and taste are incredible and the few points each category lost were due to lack of complexity. If you enjoy a stout dominant in coffee aroma and flavor, this is DEFINITELY for you.

M: Medium to full body, almost no detectable alcohol. Great carbonation and still very smooth. Lightly bitter.

D: Drinks incredibly well for such an assertively flavored brew. I will be back to Spring House before the last batch of this seasonal goes.

Oh snap. I get to try the Planet Bean. I had waited a long, long time to try this one. 750ml bottle was corked and caged, and served at cellar temp. Poured into a pint glass and this one were consumed on 02/03/2010.
 
The pour was simply stunning, rich dark black in color with a nice one inch head of foam that just sat up on the top ever so gently. Never really receding but just dropping tons and tons of lacing all over the glass. Best coffee aroma I have ever come across in a beer. Rich, dark, well roasted. No sign of bitterness just the sweet, medium roast that was simply amazing. Even warming seemed to simply accent this even more bringing forward loads of rich coffee, hints of chocolate and even a touch of vanilla. Such a smooth, even flavor I was beside myself with every sip. It seemed to start to take on a life of its own after a few minutes. Rich decadent coffee with a touch of a bourbon edge, just really wonderfully done. Not sure if that was just me picking that up but there was this wonderful sense of richness to it that it almost tasted like an oak like barrel influence. Again stunningly done. Near perfect full body with a richness that was sincerely second to none. I just kept going back to it over and over and over some more.
 
One of the best beers I have ever had hands down. Deserves every heap of praise it gets. Too bad there is just not more of it out there.

Someone brought this to the Younger release last Friday, but I'm not sure who. Thanks, whoever you are.

It's black in the glass with a dark brown head that subsides quickly. The nose absolutely reeks of coffee, there's literally nothing else there. It's like inhaling used coffee grounds. One-dimensional but enjoyable. It's the same on the palate, massive coffee flavor with only a hint of malt backing it. The mouthfeel is a bit thin, I feel like this could use more body and a touch more malt to balance the huge coffee flavor. Very enjoyable overall, with an overly dominant but nicely executed coffee character.

A special thanks to my buddy Brian for making this one possible. Out of my DFH snifter, pretty sure this was a bottle from this year. The cork was pretty tough to get out...

A-Very short, light tan head, that dissipates quickly. Pitch black in color, and allows no light to pass through.

S-Smells of rich, fresh ground, dark coffee. The smell is so dominant, that I really don't notice anything else.

T-Somewhat bitter upfront, but transitions to a nice flavor of black coffee. It smoothes lightly, and then hits with a strong coffee aftertaste. Could be a little heavier on the malt, and not so coffee dominant

M- Honestly, it's just a little too thin for my liking. I expected it to be a little thicker, and have a bit more mouth to it.

D-Very drinkable, despite the somewhat bitterness. As a coffee lover, I find myself keep reaching for more and more. The lingering coffee flavor in my mouth keeps me craving more.

All in all a very solid beer, and among the top coffee flavored beers I've had. I forget what coffee was blended, but it is very tasty and dark. The smell is crazy strong, and just reeks of coffee. I'd definitely grab another bottle if given the opportunity.

750 mL courtesy of cmurren25, thanks man! Pours "darker'n a black steer's tookus on a moonless prairie night" with a fine-bubbled light brown foam. Some lacing, not much and retention is average.

Nose is coffee all the way. Husky beans, freshly ground! A little bit of sweet chocolate but the coffee really dominates.

Whoa, this is surprisingly easy to drink. Alcohol does not play much of a role here. Not really thick and chewy...nor is it thin; just goes down so damn fast. Acidic from the coffee and malt, fresh as hell tasting. Touch of sweetness makes this one of the best coffee beers I have ever had.

Appearance: Pitch black with a thin mocha head.

Smell: Pure iced coffee. Really strong robust coffee nose, deep dark chocolate, roasted malts.

Taste: Roasted coffee, chocolate and roasted malt.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied and really smooth.

Drinkability: I was really impressed by this. I've had it before but this was a wow experience. Amazing on tap.

Poured from tap into pint at standard tap philly. Pours a deep brown mud with thick tan head. Awesome coffee aromas...straight up coffee. Taste is roasted coffee and chocolate. Not much else but is delicious. Smooth as silk. This is a fantastic coffee brew...highly recommend this one.

After having sampled a bottle of Planet Bean that was easily 6+ months old, I had a "fresh" pour of it on draft at the Spring House Taproom. In comparison to my review from the bottle, some minor things are different, noted below:

S: Fresh coffee beans, slightly roasted and not overly charred or so black tasting. It's a nice balanced coffee flavor this time, a bit more mild and inviting. I also got a bit of chocolate that I didn't get from the bottle. Certainly an improvement from an aged bottle, the coffee is definitely meant to have this certain fresh, brightness to it I'm gathering.

T: So much better, the coffee bean flavor has a slight bitterness to it but it's again very mild. The roasting is just right, not stale, overly roasted or off. It's quite rich and I get some nice caramel and chocolate malts this time too, giving this a good depth of flavor.

Everything else was essentially the same as the bottled version. It's not my favorite coffee-forward beer however, as with other coffee beers, this is most certainly better consumed fresh.

I had this on-tap at the taproom in Lancaster. Served in a sample glass.

Appearance: Pours almost black with some red at the edges. There is a layer of tan head that fades quickly.

Smell: Nutty malt with roasty coffee and a nice sweetness in the background. The overall smell is quite smooth.

Taste: Smooth coffee with nutty, roasted malt. The overall flavor is a bit creamy with some dark fruit. The finish is slightly bitter and full of roast.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with smooth carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This is a really nice coffee beer. I wouldn't have minded if the body was a little bit thicker, but I would definitely have another.

a- looks above average, super dark with a small brown head

s- lots of roasted coffee with a slight plastic scebt in the bachend, not sure what that is but ive encountered it before. definilty delivers the coffee, like a straight cup of joe.

t- taste is pleasant. nice coffee not to overwhelming, with a hint of chocolate. feels like its missing something. still easy to drink.

m- much thinner than i was expecting until i noticed on here its 7% so its just about right.

o- tasty brew. has a lot going for it. its no wnb or fbs but id definitly delivers the coffee craving.

Poured from a 22, this one pours a deep, dark brown that looks black at a glance, but when held to the light, there's no ruby - just a deep, root-beer brown. A sandy tan/brown head rises on the pour but falls to a film in a minute or two.

At first it smells just like cold-pressed coffee, but upon closer inspection, there's a dry, roasty barley beneath. Really mono-tone with the roasted bean and barley, but delightfully so.

Starts with a nice blend of dry, clean raosted notes, almost like a clean brown ale crossed with a porter and soaked in coffee, which is quite enticing, but the delight doesn't last. It quickly nose-dives into an astringent, bitter, over-roasted coffee flavor. What was awesome in the nose came back to bite this beer in the flavor. Too bad.

Feels clean and smooth with just a soft foam of carbonation to add a touch of viscosity.

This is really almost too much to drink. The astringent over-roasted coffee flavor has made me contemplate a drain-pour, but I think I'll hold out. Too bad.

Poured from a corked and caged 750ml bottle into a Boulevard tulip. Thanks to corby112 for this from our most recent trade!

A: Pours an absolutely shade of burnt motor oil black. No light getting throught this one. Sitting on top is a quickly dissipating, dark khaki head that starts off at about two fingers and then melts down to a whispy skim and thick ring. Some sticky ropes were left behind.

S: Extremely coffee forward. Heavily roasted dark roast/espresso with layers of burnt malt, cocoa nibs, fudge, and dark chocolate. Now and again I caught a faint cherry and/or lemon aroma, too.

T: Just as above with the addition of more ashy char, pepper, and robust chocolate. I could swear I picked up a meaty and roasty chipotle pepper flavor as well.

M: Right out of the fridge it poured a little on the thin side and only thickened a fraction as it warmed. Quite bitter and peppery.

D: Very easy to drink. A 7% coffee stout...damn near sessionable in my book.

This is by far the best tasting coffee stout that I have ever tasted. Many have tried to create this combination, but very few have succeded. Without the coffee, this alone would be a great tasting stout, but the coffee combination makes it even better. It's very smooth and refreshing. This is something that you could easily drink for breakfast!
