A - Served with a hazy, amber body that yielded a one finger white head...the head showed great staying power and left some lacing behind
S - The hops have a citrus note to them as well as an earthy tone...an underlying spice bill creeps up as the beer has a chance to warm
T - Hops are present with the first sip...they give way to a huge fruit flavor going both ways, bright and dark...a sweet candied sugar flavor presents itself in the middle of the beer and lingers to the finish...the Belgian spices have a chance to shine in the middle...I like that they never become overpowering...they have a chance to pair nicely with the earthy hops
M - Medium bodied...smooth, sweet, no hop bite or spice presence
O - I enjoyed this Belgian IPA...there was a nice fruit presence along with a sweet candied sugar flavor throughout...my only complaint would be the lack of hop and spice presence in the finish

I had this on-tap at the brewpub in Lancaster. Served in a sample glass.
Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy amber color with a layer of off white head. There is decent retention with some lacing.
Smell: Slightly fruity hops with some sweet malt. The smell is quite mild overall with no real Belgian spice showing up.
Taste: This IPA is missing most of the hops. Not very bitter at all. Bready malt with some mild hops and little Belgian Spice. This would be better as a Belgian pale ale.
Mouthfeel: Medium body with aggressive carbonation and a dry finish.
Overall: This beer needs more hop bitterness. I'm fine with letting the Belgian yeast do its thing, but there needs to be more.

Growler into a snifter. $15 for the fill at the brewery.
A: Honey colored, goldenrod, extremely hazy, nearly opaque. The small head is now just a collar. Bright white, tight knit bubbles and spare lacing.
S: Heavily hoppy with dank, musty earth and herbal aromas.. Heavily yeasty. Light fruity esters and peppery spice. Pale malts, lightly sweet. Slightly hot. Hay and a very faint barnyard funk.
T: Very bold flavor qualities. YEASTY. HOPPY. BITTER. But while the Robot Bastard has a solid flavor profile, I think it is stronger in the other sensory departments. The presence of alcohol is way too strong and keeps the score in the middle of the road. The growler was kept inverted for a day or two before consumption, so when it was time to pour, the yeast was well incorporated. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. I'd like to see how this brew benefits from letting the yeast settle to the bottom and decanting prior to serving. For me, the yeast was a bit harsh and the flavor nuances hidden.
M: Hot again on the palate with noticeable warmth all the way down to the stomach. Prickly carbonation. Medium body, slick texture. Dry from front palate to finish. Bitter finish and hardly sweet at any point. Enduring flavor with an excellent spritzer-like effervescence.
D: I am mostly impressed with how this brew is unquestionably a Belgian IPA. I found it to be equally "Belgian" and "IPA" whereas others in this style tend to gravitate more towards only one of these qualities. Do we need an "American style Belgian IPA" and a "Belgian style Belgian IPA" guys? Let's hope not.

Dispensed via growler on 4/3/10.
A - Poured a clear amber/orange body with a cyclone of carbonation bubbles up through the middle and a frothy cap of white bubbles that settled into a thin patch and ring around the glass, but yielded thich swatches of web-like lacing.
S - Pretty muted aroma overall with a slight spicy yeast character, citrus notes and a hint of grainy malt. A faint alcohol presence also emerged as the liquid warmed up a bit.
T - Citrusy and earthy notes with an herbal flair and a slight musty yeast character reminiscent of damp basement walls, the latter of which demonstrates characteristics of a Belgian-style ale. Finishes with a toasted grainy malt aspect and light alcohol notes.
M - Medium bodied with a smooth texture, although just a tad watery perhaps. Finishes with a moderate hop bite on the palate amid mild funky notes.
D - Robot Bastard! seems to lean a bit more toward the "Belgian" than the "IPA," but overall I found this to be fresh and tasty. FINALLY ROBOTIC BEINGS RULE THE WORLD! THE HUMANS ARE DEAD!!!
