Notes/Commercial Description:
Creamy, malty, and full-bodied, the Big Gruesome Stout is scary good. The intense, roasty flavor comes from two types of chocolate malt and raw cocoa nibs. The stout is then aged on whole vanilla beans and more raw cocoa nibs to enhance the chocolate flavors. Rich peanut butter is introduced throughout the entire brewing process to make this stout even more Gruesome.

Served on tap in a snifter glass

Appearance – Served a deep black brew with a two finger cream colored head. The head faded over a moderate level of time to leave a fantastic level of lacing.

Smell- The smell is huge of chocolate and sweet peanut butter. It is like a peanut butter buckeye ball. Delicious.

Taste- The taste is much drier then the nose would suggest. It starts out of rather roasted and malty with a little bit of chocolate. As the flavor advances some flavors of a creamy peanut butter begin working their way into the taste. The peanut better and chocolate grow more intense as the taste moves on, with some of the roasted malt flavors dwindling a bit. Overall this creates a lighter dry peanut and cocoa flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is average in terms of creaminess with a carbonation level that is rather average. A bit of a thicker body as well as a lower carbonation level would have better accentuated the darker and peanut better flavors of the beer.

Overall – An interesting brew. Super sweet smelling, but much drier and roastier then expected from the nose. The only thing holding the brew back was the rather weak mouthfeel. Otherwise it is fantastic. Regardless it is one you should try if you get the chance.

Had on tap at Paradise by the Slice. Thanks to Shane for this one!

A: Big Gruesome is deep black with a small tan color head, decent retention leaving a small cap on top. Thin lacing forms on the sides.

S: Just like Reese's Pieces, some peanut butter and chocolate, a bit of cream and sweetness. Very nice, just like candy.

T: More peanut butter and chocolate on the flavor profile. Not as specific as the aroma where it instantly reminded me of Reese's. Mostly milk chocolate, a little but of cream, and a faint roastiness.

M: Medium bodied, maybe a touch thin. Very smooth and creamy.

O: Very happy to have finally tried this beer. Definitely a sweet beer, and a treat. not something I would drink all the time, but would be happy to have it again. Perfect dessert beer.
