Notes/Commercial Description:
Creamy, malty, and full-bodied, the Big Gruesome Stout is scary good. The intense, roasty flavor comes from two types of chocolate malt and raw cocoa nibs. The stout is then aged on whole vanilla beans and more raw cocoa nibs to enhance the chocolate flavors. Rich peanut butter is introduced throughout the entire brewing process to make this stout even more Gruesome.

Picked up this bomber bottle about 4 months ago and cracked it open looking for a liquid dessert. Gruesome did not disappoint. Poured thick black into a wide tulip glass with half inch of light caramel colored head. Wonderful smell of vanilla and peanut butter. These "novelty" beers scare me as they often tend to be overly sweet or lack the flavor it promotes ( like peanut butter). This one however, succeeded on both notes. The flavor is slightly sweet with vanilla notes hitting first followed by peanut butter and then a cocoa roasty finish. The mouthfeel is thick but as I expected for a beer of this abv and depth.

Seek this out. It is not an everyday beer but a perfect accompaniment for dessert or dessert on its own. Great complexity and a beer that delivers peanut butter flavor with vanilla notes yet offset by a nice hop balance. A real treat.

Had on tap at Paradise by the Slice. Thanks to Shane for this one!

A: Big Gruesome is deep black with a small tan color head, decent retention leaving a small cap on top. Thin lacing forms on the sides.

S: Just like Reese's Pieces, some peanut butter and chocolate, a bit of cream and sweetness. Very nice, just like candy.

T: More peanut butter and chocolate on the flavor profile. Not as specific as the aroma where it instantly reminded me of Reese's. Mostly milk chocolate, a little but of cream, and a faint roastiness.

M: Medium bodied, maybe a touch thin. Very smooth and creamy.

O: Very happy to have finally tried this beer. Definitely a sweet beer, and a treat. not something I would drink all the time, but would be happy to have it again. Perfect dessert beer.

I poured this from a bomber into a Dogfish Head Signature glass.

A: The beer pours an oily black with a nice, one inch tan head. It's a pretty stout for sure.

S: Definitely big notes of peanut butter in the nose. Not so much chocolate, but hey.

T: Big notes of peanut butter with a solid backbone on this brew. I get some chocolate, but peanut definitely dominates this beer. This beer finishes relatively dry.

M: The mouthfeel is pretty smooth as a stout like this should be. Dig it.

O: Overall, I like this beer a good bit. This is definitely comparable to Sweet Baby Jesus and is very tasty. Cheers!
