Notes/Commercial Description:
Creamy, malty, and full-bodied, the Big Gruesome Stout is scary good. The intense, roasty flavor comes from two types of chocolate malt and raw cocoa nibs. The stout is then aged on whole vanilla beans and more raw cocoa nibs to enhance the chocolate flavors. Rich peanut butter is introduced throughout the entire brewing process to make this stout even more Gruesome.

Thanks to rudzud for sharing.

Pours a great creamy dark fluffy head hits a finger and fades slowly, nice lacing, pitch black beer.

Nose brings a nice chocolate, fudgey cocoa, then peanut butter, more like the peanut and shell rather than Peanutbutter. Mild caramel sweetness, slight salty like note.

Taste brings fudgey cocoa, creamy choc and cookie wafer, very mild peanut, again more like the nut than Peanutbutter, choc chip macadamia nut cookie. Mild bitterness, and mild creamy milk choc. Finish is drier and mild bitterness, more choc and cookie, very light nut.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, little creamy, decent carb.

Overall a good beer but lacking on actual Peanutbutter. Decent nutty notes, nice chocolate and cookie, etc.

Date: 12/4/14
Location: Wegman's Allentown
Bottle/Draught: 750ml Bottle
Glassware: Snifter

Appearance: Black to very dark brown in color. Pours with a large mocha to beige colored head. Nice retention as parts of the head never leave the beer. Little carbonation cling as the beer momentarily clings to the glass and then falls.
Aroma: Strong aromas of cocoa and peanut butter. Bitter chocolates and vanilla. Some lactose aroma along with the cocoa and vanilla gives the beer a sweet to almost fruity smell.
Taste: The start is sweet to near fruity in flavor with the cocoa and vanilla taking charge. The peanut butter comes in and adds its distinct rich flavor until the finish where the dark malts and some hops add a bit of bitterness and earthy flavors.
Mouthfeel: Medium to medium full bodied that is smooth as silk from the vanilla and lactose until the finish when some of the courser dark malts come in. High carbonation helps to lighten the beer and helps to bring the dry hopped vanilla and cocoa to the front.

Got this on tap at a local pub, poured into a standard pint glass:

Appearance: Dark chocolate verging on black with a nice, even rust brown head that keeps its retention. Solid lacing on the side of the glass.

Aroma: The smell of chocolate and malt is what hits me strongest. I'm not really getting the peanut butter though, i have to admit.

Taste: Lots of malty chocolate on the first taste. It's a decent stout.

Mouthfeel: Thickness on the approach, medium body, some bitterness on the back of the tongue. Smooth in general.

Overall: I'm not sure what I was expecting when I tried this beer. The name "Big Gruesome" doesn't scream delicious flavors. I always hesitate when breweries give their products such garish, ridiculous monikers. But all in all, I was fairly impressed by this concoction, and I thought the chocolate flavor meshed well in the stout.

Shared with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark black hue with with a nice mocha head that fades to leave thin wisps and halo.

S - Aromas of fudgy chocolate, light peanut butter, sweet malts, nice light roast. Really pleasant nose.

T - Taste is quite chocolatey, nice nuttiness, I don't get much peanut butter at all, it's there over the chocolate but it's super faint. More roast nut than peanut butter. Huge shame as the peanut butter is incredibly subtle.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, alcohol nicely hidden.

O - Overall this stout, while good, was a disappointment. Not nearly enough peanut butter to make this as sought after as it is. Ugh.
