A - Served with a dull golden yellow body...it was pretty cloudy actually...a white head stood about a finger tall and receded to a full ring...some lacing was left behind

S - Pure pineapple juice...the nose is spot on with real pineapple mixed with Dole Pineapple Juice...some pale malts and slight yeast come through as the beer warms

T - The pineapple doesn't have the chance to shine like it did in the nose...there is a blast of pineapple with the first sip, but the pale malts and other citric hops take over mid sip...the yeast strain stands strong throughout the beer...the finish tries to provide some pineapple and sweetness to overcome the yeast

M - Medium bodied...nice carbonation, some pineapple in the finish, spicy yeast

O - I love pineapple and the nose had my hopes high...but as with the Pale Ales from Spring House there is strong yeast presence that mutes the star flavors

On tap @ the Spring House Taproom (Lancaster, PA) on 6/2/12. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a clear copper, with a ½ finger or so of frothy bright-white head. This maintains a thin foaminess throughout, leaving back lots of sticky lacing. The aroma is mostly all juicy pineapple flavors. There is maybe a bit of some light floral edges and malt sweetness along the back but this is pretty much all tropical sweetness with a bitter edge to it from the fruit.

The taste is the same, with pineapple giving this not only a ripe juiciness but also a pretty heady amount of pithy bitterness that lingers strongly in a dry finish. This is undercut by some neutral sweet graininess and a light grassy hops bitterness but the overall impression here is flavorful and bright feeling fruit flavors. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and prickly on the tongue with more of a smooth feeling crispness along the back. This has a nice quenching flow to it that compliments the flavors here well.

Well, like most of the fruit beers from here, this is pretty heavy on the pineapple and your overall enjoyment of this is probably going to depend on how much you like it. That said, I thought that is worked very nicely as the primary flavor in a Pale Ale, as it brings not only added sweetness to the table but also its own bitterness without having to overly rely on hops to keep this crisp. This was quite tasty and drinkable, especially as it warmed up.

Growler to pint glass. Shared with family and friends the day it was filled. Sampled 4/7/12.

A: One and a half fingers of a light brown foamy head rises, retains well, and falls to a long lasting film and collar. The body is a medium dark coppery-amber color and considerably darker than expected for a pineapple beverage of any sorts. Magnificent clarity. Complete sheets of lace grab the walls of the glass each time it is tilted back.

S: Bold aromas of pineapple hit the nose first and, as expected, make it hard to pick out the grain and hop aromatics. While the pineapple scent is somewhat juice-like, it is not recklessly *oozing* with sweetness - or is at least countered with enough bitterness to offset. So, well done on the nose.

T: Mild caramel malt backdrop, firm bitterness. Intense flavors of pineapple juice/concentrate begin to take over almost all of the beer-related qualities. Very sweet and soda-like...and artificial. Pleasant flavor (show me somebody that doesn't like pineapple!) but overbearing by the end of the glass.

M: Medium-light body with an appropriate and satisfying level of carbonation throughout the swallow - sustaining even afterwards - and inviting the flavor to carry on through.

O: Good novelty beer...so enjoy it for what it is. I was kind of hoping, however, that Matt would have allowed a more natural pineapple character to come through from the hop selection instead of what seemed to be fruit or even juice concentrate. With that in mind, I think that there could be some potential in IPA or DIPA territory as well.
