Picked up a bottle at EuroMarket in Astoria. Man, this beer was terribly skunked. After a good 20 minutes or so, the aroma finally cleared up and it left behind a light-bodied, drinkable pilsner with a cracker-like malt taste and a mild spicy hop finish with a good bitter kick. I'd like to try this fresh.

500 ml best before 15.08.08. According to the label, this beer won a gold medal in 1891 (and two in 2006). Maybe it's the Czech version of PBR?

Pours clear as the pint glass it's in with a golden straw hue. Some small bubbles drift toward the top, joining a head that dropped from an initially impressive two fingers to a reasonable millimeter or so with complete coverage.

Smell is sugary grain and grassy hops. Hops are pungent and slightly spicy. The bottle claims that the ingredients are "drinking water from own well, Moravian malt, Zhateski hops, hops extract." Never heard of Zhateski hops...

Taste is musty, with hops that are much more grassy than bitter. The malt packs a definite off-note that is tough to place... starts out decently but then the taste drops off toward the end. There is little interaction between the malt and hops, which is at least nice as the spiciness of the hops is unadulterated.

This beer is aggressively carbonated, which is fine for this taste profile. Much belching didst ensue during the consumption of this beer.

I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to drink this, and 500 ml was plenty. Not very nuanced, and the malt is subpar, but a small bonus for not sacrificing taste as a light beer.
