Poured from a .33L bottle into a C&B Belgian beer glass. Pours a midnight black with a tan creamy head of about 2 fingers depth. Gradually simmers down some, leaving some decent looking foam trails on the sides of the glass.
Smell is very malty--sweet molasses, birch syrup with roasted notes. Something else sweet lurks in there along the lines of candied fruit and caramel.
Taste is rich, sweet malts with some winter fruit currents. Pear and/or apple. Definitely has a sweet molasses/syrup quality and taste to it. A true dessert beer if I ever had one. Mellow burnt caramel finish with some alcohol heat coming through. A very even keeled offering. Does not electrify the tastebuds, but has a reliable quality to it.
Mouthfeel is full and substantial. Moderate carbonation blends well with the overall experience. Drinkability is fine. I'm not really interested enough to immediately want another, but still a nice after-dinner sweet ending. 9% ABV comes through some in the finish, but definitely not front-and-center or overpowering.
