They've done a good job of coming back from the devastating fire that closed the place 10 years or so ago, but they haven't done much to reclaim the title of the best beer place in the city. In the days before the craft brew explosion, this was the only place to get away from the steady drumbeat of Bud and Miller Lite. It was a destination for people looking for imports and that rare American-produced gem. Today, it is exactly the same, which is to say, the beer list has not grown significantly since, say, 1985: Still very heavy on imports and sadly thin on craft offerings. There's plenty of the usual: Bells, Dogfish Head, Anchor. But there's nothing exotic or interesting to match some of the new places springing up around town. And the draft offerings lean toward the Stella and Guinness side. All that said, the food is light and basic, the staff is friendly, and the renovation since the fire has lightened up the heavy dark wood feel. It's a cute place and perfectly acceptable for a nice beer lunch, but no longer a place to go out of your way for.

Nothing too special here with a pretty underwhelming taplist (Pilsner Urquell, Fuller's ESB, St. George Porter were best of the bunch) with a pretty nice bottle list and a 25% reduced price for take-away is not bad. Prices were not really in line with most other beer-centered bars in Charlottesville (20oz Pilsner Urquell for $5.50 -- not even competitive), and the service was adequate at best when I could get his attention away from his laptop. We sat at the bar which is tiny and was not a great choice, but the overall atmosphere is subdues but overlit. I doubt I will be back unless meeting someone else there.

Not the most intimate place in the world, and when my party arrived, we felt unwelcome. I asked the bartender when they were closing ( this was about 9:00 on a Saturday) and he replied "Maybe in a little while, it depends." if I had been on my own, I would have told him to @&$? off. He then made a sarcastic remark when he came to take the order. The beer selection is very good, and I commend the St. George's porter. No one else was in the place, which is kind of telling that early in the evening ( granted, it's more of an after-work bar for lawyers, but. . .).

Court Square Tavern is a nice little pub, located right across from the Albemarle County Courthouse in Court Square. As such, parking is always a little tough, and the clientèle is on the professional side - not that there's anything wrong with that. Atmosphere is a little too bright, although there are plenty of little nooks one can hide away in, which I always enjoy. Also was somewhat distracted by the television, which seemed out of place. Service was excellent, and my waitress was very attentive, although it wasn't too busy when I went - I'll have to go back and see if that holds true during rush hour. The selection was fairly good - a lot of standards on tap and in bottles, and the prices were really not that bad at all. Although I did not eat, other individuals in my party did, and they were pleased with the food. Overall, I would recommend CST over the vast majority of the other bars in C'ville - the selection is far better, and although the atmosphere leaves a little something to be desired, it's better than being crammed between two drunk college students in a smoky room somewhere else.

Update: Went there again the other day, and there was nothing on the food menu. Literally, nothing - they were out of everything, and the owner (I think it was the owner) was putting things together hodge podge in the kitchen. Pretty terrible.

This place is a nice little basement place with lots of wood aspects and an extremely short bar with surrounding tables. The food which I didn't try looked to be an eclectic style. The beers on tap were a selection of four nice micro specials. The bottle selection was nice with a big focus on British and German. I had a that crazy 14% Austrian number I still can't get here. The only bad thing for me was there was hardly anyone in there and we had to wait way too long for service. That was the only downside and may only be reflective of that particular server. A good place to go hide after hitting the downtown market.

Yep, hard to beat the old CST for gettin your beer jones on. I too had the luxury of experiencing Allgauer Cambonator for the first time there, as well as Tucher Bajuvator.

As a matter of fact, make that a trifecta, since I also had Pilsener Urquell on-tap for the first time there, to whet my whistle.

Later, on a blood-fever quest for more Allgauer and not being able to find it ANYWHERE in MD/DC/NoVA, the beer manager, or whoever it was I spoke to, easily spent twenty minutes to a half-hour on the phone, telling me how I might be able to track down more Allgauer Cambonator. He tipped me off to an importer in Newport News, and the renagade salesman who does runs for them, and others, along the I-64/81 corridor, from VA Beach to Blacksburg.

Basically, there is a spice road of Allgauer that runs right through the middle of Virginia! Go Figure.

In any case, give your props to the Tavern, and try to get the table in front of the big portrait of the Kaiser-looking dude. It's the best, lowest-traffic vantage point.

PS - A third-hand acquaintance of mine has a good website (though quite a bit dated) covering Court Square Tavern.

Enjoyed the company of Murph and Artied2 here recently. Small place with a few tables; bar, to the left as you enter, but no seats there. Step down to the right to a few, scattered tables. Only a few taps, but dozens and dozens of bottled biers, with some rare ones (how often do you find Allgauer Cambonator? I never have!). Happened to have quite a few German Hefeweizens available at this time. Cool place!

A nice small hole in the wall with a real comfortable atmosphere. All tables and booths with no seating at the bar. The selection was amazing. While they only had 4 brews on draft they had about 100 in bottles. Tons of German, Belgian, and other european brews to go along with a great selection of American Micros. I've had the food now several times and it is not exactly wonderful but certainly passable. The service seems to be spotty as I've had excellent service and then other times I had to go searching for the waitstaff to order another beer.
Overall a nice little place.
