64oz. growler into a Heady Topper pint.

.5 finger foamy white head with poor retention. Beer is a clear, dark mahogany. Stringy and sparse lace with little retention. Average.

Nose is sap resin, brown sugar, caramel, citrus and other tropical fruit. Aromatic, sweet with a touch of hop presence. Appetizing.

Opens sweet brown sugar and caramel. Sap hop resin and tropical fruit towards the middle. Brown sugar with a touch of booziness at the end. More hop resin and a big malt body finish. No balance. Big malt backbone. I like it.

Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth and slick in the mouth with a bit of bubbles. Goes down with a touch of heat. Finishes messy with a lingering, sticky aftertaste. Really good.

While I don't think this is as good as their regular ipa because of the huge malt presence, SNAFU is still very solid. Worth trying if you're into ipas with a much sweeter persuasion.

Served on-tap at the brewpub. I have been wanting to try this for almost two years now, glad to see it back on finally.

A - Pours slightly hazy burnt orange with a nice one finger tall off white head leaving small trails of lace down parts of the glass.

S - Smells of dulled tropical fruit, pungent citric hops and quite a bit of sugary sweetness. The sweetness begins to take over, making the other aromas almost disappear entirely.

T - Starts off with a nice mix of fresh tropical fruit and sticky citric hop resin quickly giving way to a big dose of candied sugar sweetness, some pine needles and a touch of chewy malt. The sweetness really started to get to me toward the end of the glass. Finish is a mix of light hop bitterness and sticky sweetness, lingering on the palate for quite awhile after consumption.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Pretty smooth feel with a decent amount of hop bitterness. The sweetness really started to take over the feel, making this one a touch hard to finish.

O - Ehh I still like the regular IPA and Ol Frosty more than this. It kind of tastes like the IPA did when they were playing around with the recipe a few years back. Don't get me wrong, it has some nice things going for it, but those other two are world class IPA's. Give it a try if you can but the regular IPA is just better.

I cant tell you how many times I have been to the SGB only to find this beer has been scratched off the menu. Not today! Draft offering into a pub style glass. The brew appears a hazy burnt copper with a finger of yellowish tan cap. Thick patches and strings of lace stick to the glass.

There is a big juicy hop aroma jumping out of the glass. It is tropical, floral and fruity with a sweetness that is almost like belgian candy sugar as ti warms up. It gets a bit herbal and rindy as you smell it more and divert from the sweeter side of the nose.

The taste is fruity like hop juice. Floral and tropical with hints of pineapple and mango then more herbal with a touch of pine and spicy bitterness. Whereas the aroma has a big punch of candy sweetness, it is not as vibrant in the flavor.Granted it is there but mild contrasted to the big hop impact.

This is a medium to fuller bodied brew with a modest to lighter level of carbonation. A bit sticky and oily with resins. There is a lot going on in this brew to like. But there are also some kinks that need worked out. While the residual sweetness really helped accent the tropical notes of the hops, it was too sweet and full feeling for an IPA that I would want to drink multiples of.

I had this at the Brew Pub. Served in a sample glass.

Appearance: The beer pours a slightly cloudy dark amber to brown color with some red where the light hits the pour. I'm getting a creamy layer of head that leaves a ring around the pour and some lacing.

Smell: Sweet citrus hops, I'm getting an apricot note. Malty sweetness backs up the hops along with a bready note.

Taste: I wouldn't say this is a great beer by any means. Malty up front and then the hops build through the pour. Definitely an east coast IPA. I'm also getting a mild brown sugar note. The finish is full of grapefruit peel and bitter hops.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with foamy carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I would say there isn't much art going on here, just an intense bitterness. The rest of the beer seemed to be lacking.

Served on cask into a pint glass

A- pours a murky looking brown with a two finger light tan head. I've never seen a single IPA so dark. Not very impressive

S- holy christ, a giant smash of pineapple assaults my nose. One of the most pungent IPAs I've run across

T- no bitterness. The taste is of super sweet pineapples. I'd almost say it's too sweet, and I'd like a little more balance to things.

M- feel is really thin, and kind of watery

D- really way too sweet. I had trouble finishing my pint.

On tap at the brewpub. Very bitter overall, above average carbonation c-hop brew with a grapefruit body and lacey. Piney, citrus resiney hop flavour. Fruity with malts to keep going. A palate cleaner. As good as a West Coast IPA. I can drink this all night.

Thanks goes to Alex for scoring this one for our 5 growler showdown. Poured from growler into Sierra Nevada Pint Glass. Notes from iPhone, so they're not all that good.

A - Pours dark reddish/brown, two fingers worth of off-white head, very little lacing.

S - Toasted malts/carmel, light citrus/floral hops, earthy notes as well. More malty then I prefer.

T - Lots of toasted malts and carmel, citrus/floral bitterness.

M - Medium bodied, low carbonation.

D - Good, but not a world-class IPA by any means.
