Stopped in at the Chubby Trout right as they opened on a Saturday. Not much in the way of atmosphere, just a standard looking bar I guess.

20 taps, decent selection. I stuck with Founders Double Trouble, but there were other worthwhile choices, nothing too rare, but solid. They also have full bar service with lots of fancy martinis etc. if that is your cup of tea. Pours were good, prices about average.

Food was very good. We talked with Johnny, the sushi maker, and he was very personable, and interesting to talk to. He made me a fresh spicy salmon roll, and it was fantastic. He said he makes all his own sauces, too. Good stuff,if you like sushi.

Nice stop in Elkhart, wouldnt hesitate to go back.

I've had a chance to stop in a Chubby Trout a few times now, and it's always a mixed bag. First, the pros. They have a pretty good selection with twenty taps. Only one of those is a macro, everything else is craft or "import." the food here is also pretty damn fantastic. I've yet to have even a mediocre meal. Now the cons. The service is terrible. I've consistently had unknowledgeable and sometimes rude waitresses. The bar keeps aren't much better. Their beer knowledge is generally pretty poor, as are their pouring abilities. Oh, and good luck trying to find out in advance what's on tap. They don't have a functioning website, an everytime I've called in to try and get just a few examples of what they have on tap I've gotten rude and sarcastic responses.
Overall, if beer knowledge and service aren't important to you, then it's a great place. Otherwise, maybe test it out and see what you think.

Chubby Trout is definately the Best Elkhart has to offer in the way of a craft beer bar. They have 20 taps and only one is a macro. I beleive that one is Pabst. They always have several Bell's, Stone, Three Floyd's, Founders, Dark Horse and few imports like Spaten on tap. They service does not know a ton about beer but they always offer a sample if you have never tried it. The food is outstanding and the menu is always changing with the seasons just like the beer menu.

And oh yeah they sell growlers! Thinking about going to get a growler fill of Double Crooked Tree from Dark Horse.

My wife and I visited the Chubby Trout on numerous occasions. Each time we have visited has been a completely different experience. The food selection is ecclectic, but in recent months has been dumbed down to lower quality offerings. We last visited Chubby Trout last Friday at the beginning of dinner. There were approximately 8-9 serving staff and not one acknowledged our presence in the restaurant.

Chubby Trout's saving grace is the 20+ microbrews on tap. One of my absolute favorites is the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

If your visit is just for beer, then you are in luck! If your visit is for dinner, good luck!

So I finally got around to reviewing this place, since Im the one who added it. The Chubby Trout doesn't have the largest selection, however for South Bend-Elkhart, it is much better than most. With 10-12 taps, and the only Macro being Miller Lite, they offer a wide range of local goodness. 3 Great Lakes offerings, Three Floyds Gumballhead on draft, SA Boston Lager and SA Winter Lager and a few other offerings, its pretty solid lineup. Their bottle selection is great, with Rogue, Stone, Bells and much more to offer. Bottles are around $3.75, which is very reasonable. Tonight I had a 22oz Bottle of Arrogant Bastard, which cost me $5 bucks. Not bad at all. Service is GREAT, if you stop in, ask for Jeremy and he will hook you up. All in all, I love this place, Cam (the owner) does a great job, and if you are in the South Bend area, I highly reccomend checking it out. You won't be dissapointed!
