Served on-tap at HopCat's 3rd Anniversary/Oil Rigger Release Party (complete with Crack Fry Eating Contest!) 01/08/11; served and tasted side-by-side with Oil Rigger and Bourbon Vanilla Oil Rigger -- from tasting notes taken at bar with my friend BA mermatinger.
Appearance: Served in a 12oz tulip glass, the color is super dark brown, nearly black, with no carbonation and an extremely thin ring of crème brûlée-colored smooth foam. All three types of Oil Rigger looked identical in the class.
Smell: Dark, roasty; freshly ground whole bean coffee, roasted malts, a dairy-like sweetness or tang. The smell is pretty subtle but the pervading aroma is fresh coffee.
Taste: A tang from the acidity of the coffee is evident. Dark, bitter coffee grounds flavor and roasty malts.
Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy, nearly flat, mouth-drying coffee richness. There is pronounced alcohol heat in the finish, but it is not overwhelming.
Drinkability & Final Thoughts: A great Russian imperial stout, especially for a burgeoning brewpub. I like the espresso version a bit more than the regular, but what's nice about all of the Oil Rigger offerings is that they do not have overpowering flavors or aromas and the alcohol is fairly subtle. It tastes fresh but not too-hot.
Serving type: on-tap
