Served on-tap at HopCat's 3rd Anniversary/Oil Rigger Release Party (complete with Crack Fry Eating Contest!) 01/08/11; served and tasted side-by-side with Espresso Oil Rigger and standard Oil Rigger -- from tasting notes taken at bar with my friend BA mermatinger.

Appearance: Served in a 12oz tulip glass, the color is super dark brown, nearly black, with no carbonation and an extremely thin ring of crème brûlée-colored smooth foam. All three pours looked identical when side-by-side.

Smell: The aroma is strongly of vanilla, vanilla extract, maple syrup and bourbon with a round, cookie-dough sweetness to it.

Taste: Vanilla with slight bourbon notes over a bed of roasty, burnt malts and coffee are the dominant flavors. Hop bitterness is understated on the palate with finishing notes of French vanilla ice cream and cookie dough.

Mouthfeel: Similarly to the other Oil Riggers, the mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, essentially no carbonation, and mouth-drying coffee richness. The alcohol is even more hidden in this version than the other two.

Drinkability & Final Thoughts: Probably my favorite of the three Oil Rigger variants we sampled. It is not the most perfect or amazing bourbon-/vanilla-aged Russian imperial stout I've had, but for what it is, it was really great. I would definitely recommend getting it if it's ever available again (doubtful) because at $6.50, these pours were really a steal.
