This brew was served from the tap at HopCat in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It arrived in a generic nonic glass, glowing the darkest muddy straw coloring. It held a half finger tall head of off white bubbles, showing good retention, and leaving sheets of lacing down the glass. A chill haze was appreciated, with an absence of sediment. Carbonation appeared to be mild. The aroma was rather light, but showed definite inclusions of wet wheatiness, tangerine sweetness, lemon rind bitterness, light bubble gum esters, sourdough breadiness, vanilla extract, big metallics, and butterscotch caramels. Our first impression was that the flavoring was equally as mild as the nose, but sweet and drinkable throughout. As we sipped, the taste opened with soured wheatiness, pilsner maltiness, lemon peel, hard mineral water, and light alcoholic burn. Moving through the finish were notes of bitter citric rind, lighter citric and grassy hops, soft peppery booze, bittered wheat, and brassy metallics. Washing to the end was continued wheaty bite, tinny metallics, coriander, cinnamon, and more herbal, dirty hops. The aftertaste breathed of vanillas, bittered wheat, peach, tangerine, apricot, grapefruit, and grassy and herbal hops. The body was medium but a bit heavy for the style, and the carbonation was average. Each sip gave good pop and smack, but lesser slurp, cream, or frothiness. The mouth was left wet, with no real dryness or astringency. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank easily.
Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was its general taste and ease of drinkability. Through the flavoring you met an even and consistent grain bill, which at no point approached corny or overly adjuncty. This solid base allowed for clean mixing from the bitterness of herbal, lightly citric, and grassy hops, along with a spicy alcohol twang on the back. Comparatively the aroma was light for the style and for our tastes, with too much in the way of metallics. Ultimately this is a tasty summertime beer, and a nice attempt for a sadly underrepresented style.
