Irish Style Red brewed with rye. Served on-draught into a 4 oz sampler glass at the Texas Craft Brewers festival (2013) in Austin, Texas. I went back for as many samples as were needed to complete a satisfactory review. Reviewed from notes taken a few weeks ago. The tap they were serving it from at their booth had a black nozzle, but they denied it was a nitro-draught beer. Reviewed as an Irish Red because that's what the sign at their booth identified this as.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a one finger wide head of white colour. Nice creaminess and thickness. Uneven scattered lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is bad - maybe 30 seconds.

Body is copper in colour. Above average vibrance. Translucent. Nontransparent. Plentiful yeast particles are visible; I had the second pour of this beer after the keg was tapped. Not quite the right colour for an Irish Red, but it's pretty appealing in general.

Sm: Fresh juicy peach, caramalt, grains, malty sweetness. Has none of the toasted malt character I love in an Irish Red. Plenty of floral and fruity hops. Cream. Clean English yeast. The peach is fantastically evocative and very fresh. No alcohol. A touch of spiciness from the rye. A pleasant and appealing aroma of mild strength.

T/Mf: Soft juicy peach fruit is accompanied by some pear and apricot notes. Soft, smooth, wet, and refreshing. Light on the palate. Juicy. Has nice floral and fruity hop character; it might be a bit overhopped for the style but it works here. Pilsner malts, amber malts. A kiss of spicy rye. The fruitiness is lovely, but I could definitely use some toasted malts.

Way too thin and weak. I do get a kiss of hop bitterness on the climax which doesn't suit the style at all. Lacks a strong full body. Has a fleeting presence on the palate and is too inadequate to support the flavours. The mouthfeel suits the taste alright, but it's lackluster for the style overall.

Dr: A unique approach to an Irish Red that feels more like a subdued English pale. The rye is interesting, but isn't enough to really make it a true roggenbier (and the roggenbier style itself is a bit troublesome in terms of classification). The peach is definitely a highlight, and while I like the beer outside of style considerations, it's far from a great Irish Red. Certainly drinkable. I'd like to try it again, preferably outside of a festival environment.
