Pine Belt pale ale
Southern Star Brewing Co
20130626
16oz can to Modern craft pint

A – A uniformly cloudy amber. Somewhat translucent, a bit translucent. Poured quite vigorously, but the head subsided very quickly, leaving just a layer of it on top.

S – Pinecone, grass, orange and a bit of pineapple. There’s also a muddled earthy-sweet smell, like dirt or rock with a bit of brown sugar. As it warms, a little the pine lets a little more citrus and floral notes through, I think I pick up a bit of mango now.

T – A whole lot of not bitter pine. There’s a tiny bit of citrus riding along in the backbone, and a malt backbone to hold it up, but it really is a pinecone bomb (not very bitter though). As it warms some citrus and grass get through the pine, and it’s better. A hop spiciness emerges as well.

M – Heavy-light bodied. A little bit tingly, a little bit smooth, less than average dryness for style. Stays close to the tongue.

D - The can says serve at 50 degrees (F) and it definitely got better as it warmed for 20 minutes. It’s good but not great. Has average complexity, but it’s masked by too much rough pine cone smell and taste.

Pours a hazy amber color with a thick creamy head.

Aroma is faintly hoppy with alcohol more noticeable as it warms. Some malt and a little fish sauce in there.

Taste is caramel malt with hop bittering and a metallic finish.

Good carb with a sweet sticky finish.

Would buy again.

A:
Pours a hazy deep amber with a beautiful three fingers of head that airily dissipates to a rock half inch of beige cream. Decent retention; lots of sticky lacing.

S:
Malty with citric hops. Lemon rind, melon, pine, caramel, and some floral notes.

T:
Crisp, bitter, refreshing. Very quick and dry with dusty, husky hop flavors up front and some rising acidity in the finish with a vaguely malty, bitter finish.

M:
Medium bodied with a nice creamy head and crisp carbonation. Pretty drinkable with slightly lingering medicinal/malt-sticky finish.

O:
Damn good IPA (or whatever you want to call it).
This is a really fresh-tasting, dry pale ale and would be perfect on a hot day. Pours very nice and obviously unfiltered (a big plus in my book), has a pretty straightforward PA nose and an even, bitter, drying (and yet fresh) taste and palate. The only thing I didn't like was that I felt like it was a little lingering and sticky to be super-drinkable. But that's just me. Pretty tasty, either way.
Basically tastes like a sun-baked pine in the Texas heat.
Would get again if I ever had access to it; well worth trying if you can get it.
