A - poured from a 12oz can into a standard pint glass. Looks fine, dark chocolate color in appearance, some tan head, mild retention. Nothing great nothing bad here.
S - smells of chocolate powder, some coffee in there, not a lot otherwise. Smells is good but nothing exciting, solidly average.
T- follows the nose some milk and dark chocolates and mild coffee. Flavors are pretty consistent throughout, some mild bittering on the end.
M - definitely the beer's weak point. Quite thin, mild low carb, expecting a lot more thickness. If this element were improved, I think everything else improves as well.
O - an average to slightly above average stout. Flavors are nice, but underwhelming. Wish it would be a little thicker and aggressive, but can't really complain. If this were available in my area, I would probably buy a four pack every now and then. As someone else pointed out, this would be a good beginner's stout.

This one pours a black fading to burnt brown like the crunchy sugar atop Crème brûlée. The head is tan and not long lived leaving minimal lacing down the glass. This leads me to expect a less than rich mouthfeel, we shall see.
The nose is hints of coffee, dark chocolate, bread, nutmeg, citronella, and camphor with a tinge of the hops. Overall a rather decent and complex nose.
The taste is rather delicious with the sweet malts floating a bevy of complexity that finishes with a nice hop bitterness that tails off to the back of the palate with a burst of sweet again. The alcohol is definitely there and warms the belly nicely. There are strong malt and roasted notes as if the beer had been Bar-B-Qued with hickory. I definitely taste hickory, though I have to question if it is even in there for real or just a culmination of the esters and ingredients.. That could be a reference to the Buried Hatchet since Hickory is often used in ax handles. There is a definite medicine like undertone with the notes of camphor, alcohol and the hops. However, this is not a bad thing as one might expect as it is subtle and only adds to the complexity of the dark chocolate, coffee, raisins, nutmeg and other spice like notes that dominate this one. The sweet malt is what really takes the edge off the harsher elements of the flavor and actually combine to make this one hell of a great beer.
Now the mouthfeel is as expected from the visual observations and is a bit watery for a stout. That said, I still really like this one and I can see this as a warmer weather stout. Being that I live in South-East Texas Stouts are more of a seasonal beer for me as I do not like the heavy succulent beers when it is above 100 f. Heavy beers are just not enjoyable in 100% humidity with temps above 100 degrees. (Hell - nothing is really enjoyable in that type of weather, even pools get to hot to be enjoyable!) So this one is nice to have as a alternative to drink on summer nights or have with a meal or a great dessert that include vanilla ice cream on top.
Overall I find this to be an excellent beer but not an excellent stout. I would rate it closer to a light porter with richer flavors. I highly recommend it and I will likely always have a little on hand.
