Very pleased to be trying this one. Big thanks to ShrLSU and PerzentRizen for sending some cans my way.
The pour is a cola-colored one. Which particular kind of cola, I couldn't tell you. Coke Zero? Whatever. The hot chocolate head tops out at just shy of a finger's width, retaining pretty nicely. Buried Hatchet Stout isn't a beer that you leave in the glass long enough to have to worry about head retention, but we'll get to that later. Not terribly much going on in the lacing department, as pretty much anything that has a remote chance of sticking quickly falls.
Nose is lightly roasty and sweet. Equal parts coffee and chocolate, with some hints of vanilla. After a few extra sniffs, this beer has a sweetness that reminds me an awful lot of Nutella, so let's go ahead and throw hazelnut into the mix, too. Nothing in the aroma really jumps out at you, but it's very pleasant. Fantastic balance.
Flavor essentially follows the blueprint laid out by the aroma. Excellent balance of sweet and roast/bitterness. This beer is 8.5% ABV? Not a chance. Light coffee, rich chocolate, a little bit of lactic sourness, and caramel sweetness.
Medium-bodied. Can't find anything wrong with the light carbonation. Slick, oily texture. Little dryness in the finish.
Not sure if I'd favor this over my beloved Lion Stout (seriously, I can't think of a better value), but it's damn close. Would love to have this beer locally available. Great flavor, and a very, very easy drinker. Thrilled to have finally tried it.

I was expecting jet black from the commercial description, but this is dark brown. Bad lighting at the Southern Star Brewery. Smells strongly of slightly burnt toast and tons of chocolate malts. I get some coffee roast in the smell, but I'd like a bit more. SWEET BEER. Lots of chocolate and toasty/roasty malts. More chocolate and toast than anything. Needs balance dearly. Mouthfeel is slick, sticky, yet not that full. Overall, this isn't that great. I'm splitting a can with someone, and it's hard to take down.
