Been waiting to try this one for a while now.
Buried Hatchet is a really stunning beer. Dark rich brown body with deep ruby highlights. Solid finger thick head, with ample sticky suds of lacing. The aroma takes on a strong roasted malt profile. With background notes of coffee, leather, and tobacco and chocolate. Flavor wise, this beer really nails it. It stays true to the aroma for the most part. Upfront, Buried Hatchet provides a great malty backbone of chocolate and roasted grains. The chocolate notes are dark and mildly sweet, and semi-dry. The roasted notes and tannins provide an aspect of balancing bitterness, rich complexity, and work perfectly with the chocolate note. Near the middle, Buried Hatchet provides a lightly citric/floral hop burp. This really works nicely with the malt all the way around creating just such an amazing flavor tone. Finishes with lots of lingering malty goodness. One other thing to note, is the mouthfeel and drinkability. Both are way above-average. This is one of the most drinkable Stouts out there. It's scary how drinkable Buried Hatchet really is. This is one damn fine Stout, meticulously crafted and validates the brewing talent of Southern Star.
