Poured from the can(cool) into a basic pint glass. Color is a dark chocolatey brown. A fingers worth of tan head sticks around for the duration.
It smells like a cup of hot cocoa. Milk chocolate with some vanilla and hint of roasted coffeee beans. Very pleasant, sweet smell. Glad I'm enjoying this as a dessert beer.
Taste has lots of creamy milk chocolate. Every sip leaves you with the flavor of bitter dark chocolate in the finish. The hop bitterness works perfectly with the chocolate flavor while being hardly noticeable on it's own. There's also a minor amount of smokiness which adds a nice complexity.
Mouthfeel is the only downer with this one. On the thin side with a bit too much carbonation. No hint at all of the 8.5% Flavor lingers for a bit, but not too long. I was not expecting this much chocolate when I cracked the can open but have to admit I'm definitely enjoying it.

I was expecting jet black from the commercial description, but this is dark brown. Bad lighting at the Southern Star Brewery. Smells strongly of slightly burnt toast and tons of chocolate malts. I get some coffee roast in the smell, but I'd like a bit more. SWEET BEER. Lots of chocolate and toasty/roasty malts. More chocolate and toast than anything. Needs balance dearly. Mouthfeel is slick, sticky, yet not that full. Overall, this isn't that great. I'm splitting a can with someone, and it's hard to take down.
