A: Dark dark brown. Black, really, until I tilt it into the light and reveal a nice earthy brown color all along the edges. Nice fluffy tan head, but not with the substantial weight most Imp Stouts produce.
S: Coffee destroys any competition they may have had in the nose. Smells really good to me, but I love coffee. Not much balance. Roasted malts are here as well, but that's only expected and doesn't do much to add to the variety.
T/F: More balanced here than in the smell. Coffee yumminess still dominant, but with some considerable competition among it's peers now. Roasted malts are hearty but not smothering when combined with the bready sweetness this beer has. Really really nice. Feels light and for an Imp Stout, but not in a bad way. The light feel combined with the powerful taste is a significant part of Buried Hatchet's charm.
D: Outstanding for an Imperial Stout. Almost unbelievable. 8.5% and full of taste and character.
With Buried Hatchet and their Pale Ale, Southern Star seems to have made optimal versions of the styles for the hot Texas climate.
