A: black black, how a porter should be
S: I get wood, smoky wood, maybe oak? Roasted malt, sweet and delish
T: perfectly porter-y, smoky, roasted malt, bitter hop and bitter malts work extremely well together. Bitter chocolate on the finish
M: carbonated, dry, bitter
D: a very good example of your standard porter. All the more impressive that this was originally a home brew submission

A: poured into a pint glass to a deep black with a two finger dense tan head that retains well
S: smells of smoke and ash with some roast malt and slight oxidation
T: taste is smokey with a little roasted malt, slight sweetness. swallow is a little oxidation with some lingering smoke
M: medium in the mouth with soft carbonation and a slightly drying finish
O: Good flavors and solid complexity with a nice smoke note. Probably should have gotten around to drinking these sooner but this is definitely a fantastic porter.

32oz growler from CBX, poured into an imperial pint glass...
A: Black; maybe brown held to light; dense, creamy, 1/2-finger head of mocha foam dies down to a haze of retention, leaving a few dots of lace.
S: Sweet malt; nice roasted notes; mesquite; this beer has a great aroma and although the smoked malt is present, it isn’t overpowering / super smoky.
T: Nice blend of roasted malt, some light coffee notes and chicory, and smoky tinges - which are especially present during the finish; this is super tasty and downright delicious!
M: Medium-full body; on the low side of moderate carbonation; silky and smooth.
O: As a big fan of smoked porters, I love this beer! Great aroma and taste, not too sweet or heavy on the smoke - and pretty easy drinking, despite the textured, near-full mouthfeel. Good stuff -

This came special delivery cloaked in a Buried Hatchet Stout can. SSBC's Smoked Porter pours up with an overabundance of carbonation that creates a huge soapy khaki-tan head that loosely climbs above the deep reddish brown-mahogany body. Head retention is OK for a smoked beer. The initial aroma lacks evidence of any smoke, but a delicate smokiness emerges as it warms along with a heavily roasted malt character that comes across slightly burnt with secondary notes including cherry pipe tobacco, black coffee and pine needles. The flavor starts of with some burnt caramel that carries into a developed roastiness from the chocolate & black malts before being balanced by an assertive spicy bitterness that carries into the slightly acrid, smoky finish. This medium bodied smoked porter has a bit of slickness & needs more smoke character, but nevertheless is quite approachable for a smoked beer. A few more cans will be required for an in-depth analysis. Good job Ed Condon & Southern Star!
