Top Fuel is a barrel aged American style Barley Wine brewed by Local Option Bierwerker. This super charged beer surges forward at 330 MPH; appearing hazy light copper with immediate notes of toffee, caramel, pine and earthy undertones. Full bodied with a velvety mouth feel, and lingering bitterness, Top Fuel is aged on Four Roses bourbon barrels, yielding a devastating barley wine worthy of its name. No adjuncts or extracts of any type are used in Top Fuel.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Thanks, Dave, for throwing this in as an extra!

A: dark, rusty brown

S: really intense: earthy citrus; toffee, vanilla, and oak; burnt brown sugar; spicy cola notes?

T: lots of toffee and brown sugar upfront; light barrel character: oaky vanilla butterscotch; strong hoppy notes; powerful but non-cloying sweetness; strong alcohol presence; could not get enough of this

M: thick, chewy, and sticky

O: fantastic integration of hop notes and barrel character

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a hazy copper with a foamy bone head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, toffee, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel and brown sugar flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toast bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but quite boozy.

Served on tap at Local Option in a snifter, thanks to Tony for sharing this and giving us a nice sample. Review from notes.

Pours a dark brown color, hues of tan and burgundy, hazy, with some obvious sediment swishing in the glass. A bubbly, loose finger of off white head is there, easily swirled to a full finger of soapy head that dissipated quickly, but leave a nice bit of lace behind. The aroma is of piney hop, resinous, sticky and oily, pleasantly bitter with a nice, rich, assertive maltiness behind it, sweet, grainy, with a great barrel presence, oaky, vanilla, light toffee and bourbon, just a hint of alcohol, which has been hidden quite well in the nose for how boozy of a beer it is. The flavors are great, piney and bitter hops blended with the barrel qualities and malt bill wonderfully well. Lots of richness, great bourbon flavor, chewy oak, a bit of light vanilla, dark breadiness and rich grain, alcohol is more evident than the nose led on. The balance is great, aggressive hops blended with chewy oak, bourbon and an ambitious malt bill. The body is great, lively, a bit of prick from the carbonation, yet slick, smooth, rich, thick and coats the mouth well that finishes really smoothly and softly with some warming heat.

Verdict: Awesome BA Barleywine from Local Option. One of the best takes on a Bourbon Barrel American Barleywine, the hops are still on point while the barrel also shines and rounds out the beer very well. I'm excited to see what aging does to this, and how it will evolve over time. Hopefully LO sits on a few kegs for a while, but this is great out of the gate.

Pours a muddy copper with no real head retention. Initial smell was intense, however that became milder as it opened up. Resiny hops, vanilla, oak and spice are all present. Toffee and brown sugar sweetness are predominate at first, but mellow to reveal vanilla, oak and warming spice. Moderately carbonated which imparts a coating thick mouthfeel that disappears quickly. Nice warming spice and alcohol presence comes through in the finish. Alcohol is present but well hidden in this BA Barleywine.
