Unknown vintage; drank 10/39/14 on draft @ Fischman's.
Brown/black hue. Dark khaki head; decent lace.
Dark cherry, marshmallow & bakers chocolate nose.
Medium thin mouthfeel.
Faint mocha notes but almost no flavor here; neutral & boring.
The nose promised so much more...too bad!

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a black color and a thick consistency. There was an inch of foamy, tan-colored, fairly long-lasting head. Very good lacing.
S: A nice aroma of malt, dark fruit, chocolate, and coffee.
T: Tasted of mild coffee notes, dark chocolate, a bit of dark fruit (plums, especially), a good amount of roasted malt, a lot of lactose (particularly in the finish), licorice, and light hops. A decent flavor that's pretty rich (for the style). The lactose presence is a bit much, but it's easily overlooked.
F: A good amount of carbonation with a very dry finish. Medium- to full-bodied.
O: This is a solidly made stout that's easy to drink. Better than most of the style.

L: Pours dense brown under a 3” tan to light brown foam stand that takes 5 minutes to reduce to half and inch. Is lacy and has a very fine bead.
S: Some light tartness, dark roast with traces of chocolate and coffee.
T: Mildly tart, rich and creamy laced with fruit hinting at cherry, dark dried fruit, a light sweetness, finishing with a mild drying grainy astringency. Coffee and chocolate come forward as the beer warms and come to dominate, evoking a cherry covered with bittersweet chocolate.
F: Very creamy full body verging on chewy. Very soft carbonation. Slight warming.
O: A pleasantly soothing drink.

There's a pretty magnificent story behind this beer, and hearing it from the brewer himself totally helped my appreciation of this beer

Picked this up on clearance from Chicago-Lake for around $2/btl for 500ml and figured it was worth a shot. Even if it is a little old it shouldn't do any harm to this 8.5% brew. No indication of the style or date on the bottle. Since I knew these guys have collaborated with central waters I figured they were from Wisconsin but label says brewed by pub dog brewing in Westminster, MD.
Upon opening the smell is nice and inviting. It pours black with a pillowy and long lasting brown head. Heavy roast flavor with slight chocolate notes on the front of your tongue with a very bitter and dry finish on the back. Kind of like a a strong black coffee without using coffee (as far as I know).
Definitely a sipper, and something I'm enjoying.
