At the peak of summer 1631 King Gustavus Adolphus led thousands of Swedish troops into Northern Germany. Following the destruction and subsequent plundering of Brandenburg Adolphus’ army marched through the endless wheat fields en route to Bavaria. Brewed with copious amounts of red wheat, Blood ov the Kings is aromatically driven by bread, biscuit and notes of exotic fruit. Hazy and medium bodied the beer has a rich and creamy mouth feel with a dry, bitter, and slightly sweet finish. Unbound by the Reinheitsgebot Blood ov the Kings would certainly have been the vital fluid of victory for the Swedish monarch as he spilled blood across the wheat fields of Northern Europe.

Poured into a Dogfish Head pint glass. Pours a quite hazy caramel amber with a thin white head that dissipates quickly to a ring around the glass. Aroma of dry biscuit malt and slight nuttiness, hay and an odd earthy component. Flavor is toasted and biscuit malt, brown rice crackers, wheat and a hint of citrus. Odd finishing bitterness, hops and something more like the bitterness in some vegetables, slightly astringent. Malty. Light to medium bodied. The intent here seems to be a hybrid of malty ale and wheat ale, and it seems to exactly that, but not that well integrated. The malt is nice and there are some interesting flavors here, but I'm not sure I would come back to this one. This is not a pale wheat ale.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep and hazy amber red. Moderate amount of bubbles and a solid finger of off white head which settles into a thin creamy patch.

Smell: An earthy and bready malt driven aroma with a scent of caramel, wheat, and biscuit. Red malt scent of caramel, toffee, wheat, grains, and biscuit with yeast. Earthy hop scent of grass and pine. Citrus hints of grapefruit, orange peel, and mango. Hints of candied sugar. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, an earthy and bready malt forward taste with notes of caramel, wheat, and biscuit. Good malt notes of caramel, toffee, wheat, grains, and biscuit with some yeast. Earthy hop notes of grass, pine, and spice. Subtle citrus fruit notes of grapefruit, orange peel, and mango. Also some notes of candied sugar and pepper. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and smooth.

Overall: A pretty nice Red Wheat Ale. Good sweet red malt notes with some nice juicy hops.

500 ml bottle.
Deep amber, clear body.
Flavor: moderately strong for style; good balance; malt forward. Hops come out in the finish and aftertaste. Fine bitter sweet balance.

on tap at local restaurant. I would not call this an American Pale Wheat but more a slightly hoppy red. Good but not great. Would not seek out again but would be willing to try again.

Enjoyed from the bottle in a pint glass. This interesting red ale pours a cloudy reddish orange with a FANTASTIC head of off white foam that has some serious staying power and some of the best sudsy lacing I have seen this year. Nose of light rye bread, sweet citrus notes of oranges and pink grapefruit, and subtle hops. Flavors surpass the nose with dark bread crust, lightly sweet iced tea like flavors melding into citrus notes on the middle, and then fading into a bitter malt and hop character on the back and aftertaste. Nice mouth feel, medium carbonation, slick but lively finishing dry.

A VERY solid creation.

Cheers

L: Hazy tea color, brownish amber lightly tan tinted head, head is rocky and persistent
S: Floral fresh cut grass and big mustiness on the nose.
T: Big fruity palate with a suggestion of peach or apricot. There is more hop bitterness in the foam than in the body, the hops are above average but are nicely balanced by the malt. Bitterness is citrus rind – pithy – but there is an earthiness in there as well.
F: There is a slightly above medium body with the wheat ale body, carbonation is above average
O: A refreshing, easy to drink American pale Wheat Ale.

Looks and smells great, a lot more like an amber or red ale than a pale wheat as it's categorized here. Nose is sweet and fruity but the taste is rather dry and I get mostly malt, hints of chocolate and hardly any hops. A really dry finish despite the sweet nose and chocolate taste. A pretty good beer - light yet flavorful - but kind of confusing between the nose and the palate (not to mention the category).

Filled a Franziskaner Weissen Glass with a surprisingly dark amber (SRM 13-14), hazy, almost murky, glow. The puffy white 1”head quickly turns rocky, leaving thick patches of lace and a bit of disappointment. Occasional big lazy bubbles meander up through the beer.

Hop forward, with citrus like tangerine rind, with a minor caramel player in the background. Warmth brings out apricot.

Quite bitter, with ginger. Grapefruit lingers far into a long bitter finish. Sweetness is present throughout the middle, accompanied by light orange flavors.

Apparently these Kings had hemophilia, as the body is ov a medium weight, with light alcohol and a silken texture. A crisp, light astringency follows through the entire session.

Blood ov the Kings, seems to be aligned with the brewer’s intent. Whichever the beer or the label description came first is irrelevant; this beer is as advertised, if not on the style mark. Ultimately this is an enjoyable beer, but the hops clearly overwhelm the wheat, perhaps just like King Adolphus as he marched through the HRE in 1631. I recommend this beer with a burger with poppers on top.

500ml into a solo cup.

A: Clear deep copper/amber with a ridiculous foamy off-white head 2 1/2" minimum that recedes slowly. Retention looks good, lacing is nice.

S: What the hell? Candied raspberry, dark chocolate, some fruity hops & bread. Um, what's going on here?

T: Ok, this brew is officially crazy. Milk chocolate & oak, piney hops here, lemon peel, slightly medicinal note, black pepper, chalk. Melted Wendy's Frosty comes to mind. Pale wheat ale? Um...

M: Overcarbed with very fine, Guinness-like bubbles. Creamy malt adds to the melted-milkshake quality. At least this is consistent with the palate.

O: I'm at a loss here. I don't know how this is a pale wheat. Uh, that said, I kind of love it. The flavor profile is unique & has essentially nothing to do with the nose. On a large-scale sense this brew makes zero sense, but I can't really fault it. I'm all-in on this one.
