Pours very dark brown with a small off-white head.
Nose shows sultanas, bready and toasty malt, melanoidin notes, liquorice, woody oak, figs and a little soy.
Flavours are quite sweet, but with a little roast. More toasty melanoidin notes as well as soy and woody, peaty characters.
Body feels thick.
Apart from the soy this was quite good.

Very fresh, bottled february 2014.
Pours dark brown with copper, 1 finger bubbly head, almost no retention, but a nice thin lace of foam sticks around (and on the glass) for a very long time.
A stoutish smell, with coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malts, with an extra smokey note. Dry wood also.
Weirdly, smoked grains (close to bacon) are the first to come up in the taste. Dark fruit character follows, with some zingy juiciness, but mostly with dry smoked plums, raisins, dry figs and faint sweet dry apricots. Rich roasted malts, multi-grain bread, rich coffee and cocoa powder. Belgian yeasts provide a nice spicy feel, lifting the stoutish earthiness. Hops manage to give voice in the finish, after the whole malt festival, green and mildly bitter.
Medium body, robust and rich malts balanced with a crisp and sharp yeastiness. Alcohol nowhere to be found.
Pretty unique. A kind of smoked Belgian stout so perfectly balanced that it should be considered a totally separate beer style.

Embrasse is murky and very dark brown with red highlights (SRM 23-25). Effervescence pushes out of the bottle before pouring and builds a one-inch, creamy khaki head that lasts a long while. A nice curtain of lace forms above a slight viscous film in an Offero glass.

Deep roasted malt and molasses are up front with pumpernickel, dates, and fig against a constant backdrop of peat smoke. Some baker’s chocolate comes out late.

The flavors pick up what the nose originally detected. This is well-balanced between bitter and sweet. The character has layers of black coffee, while the molasses shines. Warmth brings out pumpernickel and Jewish rye. A long building finish adds to roasted bitterness.

The early explosive carbonation becomes well-controlled while warming alcohol is below expectation. A medium body and cotton texture.

This addition of Embrasse is excellent for contemplation on a sad day. The symbolism of its name adds to the experience. A strong gorgonzola or cured meat would pair well.

Bottle #21103 September 2012. I will enjoy this bottle while reminiscing about my Grandmother, Ruby, and contemplating her continuing journey.

Poured from 22oz bottle into Chimay goblet.

A - Coffee brown pour with a souffle-like tan head.

S - Raisin/prune fruitiness, grainy malts, yeasty funk.

T - Molasses, coffee, cocoa, dark roasted malts, fades to bitterness (hops?). The alcohol is well hidden.

M - Smooth, slick, initial burst of carbonation dissipates quickly.

I really like this one. The smell is pure BSDA, but the taste is more reminiscent of a porter or stout. All of my favorite beer styles rolled into one unique brew.

A: First thing to note is that as soon as I opened the bottle the head started pouring out of it. The beer itself is a dark mahogany with a thick layer of brown head on top that seems to have infinite retention.

S: A hint of chocolate, cherry and raisins, some Belgian yeast, some alcoholic esters. Also a nice nuttiness comes through as the beer warms. Really a great, complex smelling brew.

T: Big maltiness up front. Sweet dark stone fruit, earthy Belgian yeast, a peppery bite from the alcohol carries the flavor through to the end, where there is also a light hop character. Despite how sweet the beer is, the finish is quite bitter, to balance out the sweetness.

M: Creamy, heavy body, and a ton of carbonation.

T: A really great beer. Lots of flavors, which expand and become more interesting as the beer warms. The balance is perfect between the sweet and bitter. Really an amazing beer.
