A - Pours pretty black, doesn't seem thick or viscous but does have a 2 finger tan head.

S - Very light nose... A bit of roasted malts & light licorice.

T - Nondescript, light malts with semi sweet chocolate.

M - Light body with medium carbonation. Needs to be thicker with less carbonation.

O - A bad portrayal of any beer in the class. A RIS should not be like this.

12oz. bottle into a Cigar City snifter.

Pours a rich, 1.5 finger cream colored head with excellent retention. Beer is pitch black and opaque but a bit on the thin side. Lacing is spotty and stringy with good stick. Pretty nice.

Nose is smoke, roast, liquorice, anise, and logan. Aromatic and pleasant but the flavor combination could be a bit sweeter and a touch boozier.

Opens sweet prunes and anise with a dose of liquorice, roast and smoke in the middle. More roast and dark fruit in the middle with a sweet and oddly salty soy sauce presence. Ends sweet and a touch boozy with some logan and coca cola flavors. Aftertaste is honey and more smoke and roast. Solid.

Medium bodied with low carbonation. Smooth and silky in the mouth and goes down soft and warm with a clean finish and barely-there aftertaste. Decent but a touch thin.

This beer reminds me of a Darkness-lite. Flavor and feel is decent but each are a bit... lacking. This could be sweeter and the body could be a bit heavier. The high ABV is hidden well but that's hardly a plus since the ABV doesn't need to be that high to begin with. Solidly average.

Thanks to jwc215 for sending this beer to me. This is my first New Jersey beer.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a cream-colored head. The aroma is that of your basic Russian Imperial Stout: Some dark fruit, roasted malt and chocolate. The flavor is roasted malt, light smoke and some alcohol. Medium-thick mouthfeel and low carbonation.

Boaks- Monster Mash Imp. Stout

A- Dark cola brownish black with a small tight foamy head.
S- Sweet malt, cola syrup, and fresh green hops.
T- Sweet corn syrup cola malt with a nice touch of green hops and cocoa powder. Alc. is quite present.
M- Sweet and cloying with a more mild bitter dry finish.

Overall- Just a tad too sweet for me. Alc. is too noticable. A boozy 1 that'll warm you and get you buzzed quickly.

Very minimal head with a dark brown liquid that is more transparent than usual for the style.
Raisons dominate with molasess and a slight dark rum character.
Dark fruit with a little bit of hop presence. A roasted character rounds out the beer.
A full body probably the beers strongest asset. Carbonation could be a little higher.
An average RIS.

A rough pour brought up a two-fingered head of frothy tan foam that held fairly well before dropping to a wide collar, but which also left little more than a smear of thin, tiny spots about the glass.

The nose is fruity, and edgy with floral/grassy/leafy hops. It's a bit perfumey. Beyond that, it's darkly caramelish like crusty-burnt-sugar; lightly chocolatey; and a touch roasty with an almost smokey edge to it. It smells more like a strong ale with a complex malt bill than a stout.

The flavor follows the suggestion of the aroma, although there's more roastiness to it. There's not a lot of depth or girth to the malt, but there are lots of hop flavors going on here. It's a bit perfumey, and the alcohol is mildly noticeable. But it's also leafy, grassy, a touch lemonish, and even spicy (that may be from the alcohol). An anise flavor is perceived within in the malt, but that may be from a combination of the darkly caramelized sugars and leafy and herbal hops.

In the mouth it's just medium bodied - I was expecting more given the "Russian Imperial Stout" designation. But, the delicate carbonation that initially reguired a rough pour at the outset leaves it quite smooth. There is, however, a brash bitterness that anchors it tightly, and then in combination with the alcohol gives it a slight harshness, negating the overall "smoothness" of it.

It finishes surprisingly soft as it seems to simply pass and then vanish for a moment before the flavors start rising again. What follows is herbal, gently spicy, anise-accented, and remarkably long lasting!

In conclusion, I find this beer to be mis-styled. It's a really interesting big beer (and I think it would be a great cigar beer), but it's far from being an Imperial stout as it doesn't have the maltiness to back it up and there's far too much hoppiness for the style. Furthermore, I think it needs a touch more maltiness just to balance it a bit. Not much, but a little. I enjoyed it, and I'll one day have another. I've reviewed it here number-wise as if it was a strong ale of some type, and not a Russian Imperial stout.

Monster Mash is a very dark mahogany color. It's nearly onyx, but a few burgundy highlights are noted at the edges. A soft, tan head covers the top. It's about a finger and a half tall and recedes quickly. Lacing was moderate.

The nose is a little underpowered, but is pretty good. It features a nice mix of chocolate and roasted malts. They seem to be equally strong. Coffee is fairly strong in the mix and adds a nice element to the overall smell. Raisin and black licorice are noted, but are secondary, complementary scents. Alcohol is blended well. I'm not getting much at all. Impressive for a 10% beer.

Monster Mash is pretty good beer. It has a nice chocolate/roasted malt base. It's not sweet, but has more of a bittersweet dark chocolate flavor. I like the coffee flavor quite a bit. It comes through loud and clear. It features ancillary flavors of black licorice, anise, light raisin, and molasses. Not bad. There's definitely evidence of a strong hop presence. It still tastes bitter and has a bit of a pine flavor. This bottle has some age on it, so I'm surprised to encounter that. I wish I would've cracked this one a little sooner. I suspect that a stronger hop flavor would warrant a score bump. Alcohol doesn't seem anywhere near the 10% ranger. It finishes roasty and bitter.

The body here feels medium-full with a little warming. It's nice and smooth. Damn near creamy. I'm tempted to pull the '4.5' trigger. Close call, but it's not quite there. Drinkability is above average. Monster Mash has a pretty good flavor and goes down easy, but a single bottle's more than enough. It's deceptively strong.

Monster Mash is my first Boak's beer. It's a pretty good effort. I think it'd be a little better if the malt flavors came through a little stronger. I'd also like a stab at a fresh bottle (while the hops are buzzing). Nonetheless, it's pretty good otherwise. I'm glad I got to try it out. Thanks, Chris.

I'm a BIG FAN of Russian Imperials. This one is drinkable, but on the disappointing side. It pours just about pitch black, with very little head. I assume this is largely because of the high ABV. For those who care about lacing, it does deliver.

The smell is... well, it seems kind of subdued. A hint of chocolate maybe. Smells also a bit like very dark chocolate - a bit acrid.

The taste is fairly true to the smell. Dark chocolate is more pronounced - the bitter kind of dark chocolate. For people who are looking for complexity, you may not find it here. The high ABV is reasonably well hidden, for those to whom that matters.

Mouthfeel is decent, if you like the feeling of a brew coating your tongue with bitterness.

This is not a bad brew! It's a sipper, not just because of the 10%, but because of the strong dark chocolate bitterness. It is very difficult, in fact, to drink more than a little bit of this at a time. That's not a bad thing, necessarily.

I am still sipping on this, and it does grow a bit on me as it warms a little. This has caused me to up my ratings by a bit.

Overall, I am glad I tried this ale, but I doubt that I would go out of my way to get it again.

Not really that much to say about this beer. Poured a dark black with no head. Aroma is sweet and malty with a few other subtle fruit flavors peeking through. Taste is alright but pretty watery. Mouthfeel is also watery with not much body and no carbonation but essentially pretty drinkable due to the fact that is just resembles colored water. Overall, a very unimpressive beer for a category that isn't even near and dear to my heart. Try again with this one.

Very dark black. Not too much carbonation on this one. Lacing is decent.

Lots of chocolate and roastiness. A touch of hops present as well.

It is very chocolately and the roastiness provides a touch of bitterness.

There is a good amount of creaminess and no chalkiest at all. Very mellow and no alcohol heat to speak of.

One of the easiest drinking 10% stouts I have ever had.

Poured black with a 1/2" of mocha head. Nice vicious look to it, average head retention & lacing

S: Coffee & cocoa powder

T: Dryness, baker's chcolate & a touch of vanilla up front. Oakyness plus chalky dryness & rich chcolate as this warms. Finishes dry & oaky with a nice mocha presence

MF: Chewy, oily, & near zero carbonation

Drinks great for the style & ABV, not a bad take on the style

12 oz bottle into a snifter.

Pours a deep dark chocolate (almost deep enough to be black) with 1 1/2 fingers of creamy mocha colored head. Nice thick rings of retention around the edges with some thin wisps that skim the middle, flaring up nicely and leaving a solid cascade of lacing down the sides of the glass. The aroma is solid with notes of chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruit, some light hoppy character, and a tingle of heat in the backend.

The taste is rich chocolate sweetness that envelopes additional notes of coffee, a vinous tasting dark fruit tartness, dark roasted character, and a touch of hop bitterness underneath. The mouthfeel is full bodied with a suprisingly creamy feel at times and a slight alcohol burn coming out as it warms, leaving a warm and bitter aftertaste on the palette.

This was a solid Imperial Stout with rich flavors but I'd like to see the heat covered up a notch more to increase the drinkibility of this. All in all, a nice start from Brian Boaks.

The Boaks Monster Mash Russian Imperial Stout, I was told is a 100 IBU, 10% ABV beer. This is a Big, Dark, Chocolaty, Hoppy Beer, but not as Heavy as most Imperial Stouts. I enjoyed nearly as much as Old Rasputin, both great beers to seek out and drink immediately or age.

Picked up a single bottle at Queen Anne Wines and Spirits in Teaneck. I love supporting local brewing in addition to my love of impy stouts...

A- Pours a THICK black liquid, light/tan creamy head, some lacing, medium carbonation bubbles.

S- Smell was sweet, creamy, chocolately, and some nut.

T- Taste was malty as expected. This was overly sweet (in a good way) for a RIS, total opposite of a RIS such as Storm King. I got a huge vanilla/brown sugar taste, some bitter hops in the back, but not overwhelming.

M- Sticky as hell. Creamy, just thick enough.

D- I love this beer. Looking forward to more stuff from this new brewer.

A big foamy smash after a gentle pour. Took some time in order to get the contents of the bottle into the glass. The head had good retention, leaving heavy lacing. Weak aroma. I pick up mostly alcohol. Faint hints of dark fruit as well. The flavor was disappointing. Mostly solvent flavor. After the first sip I was hesitant to take another. Hints of plums, and chocolate helps elevate the score above failing. Hops are non-existant. The body is just ok. It does have a nice texture. Not a very good example of a RIS. I will not want another.

Upgraded my grade from A- to A. I love this stuff. A true RIS in great balance between malt sweetness and hop bitterness. Awesome.

Massive Malt and Hops balanced is really nice and unique.

I have had a couple of well hopped RIS's but always with Northwest Hops (Cascades or the like). I am not a fan of them.

So Monster Mash with it's more European hops make for a great RIS option for me.

Apperance: Thick black, viscous, one finger head.

Smell: Hoppy Malty. Cherry, grass, sweet malt, and hop all there.

Taste: Awesome! Nice thick malt hits you first, them balances with hop flavor, and finishes well with a good dose of hop bitterness. Each sip a great experience.

Mouthfeel: Nice and thick without the puckering sweetness of some RIS's. Great

Drinkability: at 10% alcohol this goes down wayt to easy.

Presentation - Poured into Southampton Pint Glass

Appearance - Pitch black, off-white head, moderate lacing

Smell - A good mixture of maltiness and hoppiness, chocolate prevalent

Taste - Chocolate, toffee, caramel, and "caw-fee" with some milkiness

Mouthfeel - Dry in front, sweet in back

Drinkability - Tastes like a stout of half the ABV of this beer, perfect as a desert beer

Overall - One of the best strong stouts I've ever had. Another win for the Garden State

didnt know this beer was from NJ! Deep deep garnet color, almost black, with blood red highlights. Good clarity from what I can tell but it's so damn dark. Bug creamy off white head. No idea as to when the beer was bottled.

Kind of dead on the nose with faint charcoal roasted malt and chocolate. Some smoke and anisette.

Taste is kind of the same, extremely subtle. Medium body with good carbonation. Charcoal and thin malts on the front end, followed by roasted malt and some chocolate. No smoke on the palate though. Finishes extremely clean. Smallest touch of detectable alcohol. A little stringy feeling in the mouth.

It's impressive that this things so damn dark and high in ABV yet so damn drinkable yet its overall kind of bland. It's maybe a good intro to Russian Imperial Stouts? Kind Of? Not much bitterness, some, but its pretty balanced.

12oz bottle. A dark thick brown with nice lasting medium brown head. Aroma of roasted caramel malt espresso note and cacao. Taste is a sweet bitter roasted caramel malt with some notes of coffee and cacao, some dark fruity tones as well with some bitter hops. Palate is a thick sweet full body with moderate carbonation and a rich thick mouth feel. Finish is sweet bitter roasted caramel malts with some burnt espresso cacao, some dark fruit followed by some nice mild bitter hops for balance. Overall a very good, drinkable ( considering a 10% alcohol) and tasty Russian IP.

A: Poured an antique mahogany from the bottle, while in the glass appeared tar black. A 3 finger mocha colored head blooms rather quickly on the pour to a foamy, whipped topping. Retention was good, still sturdy and respectable after 3-4 minutes while leaving a thin spongey coating for a lacing.

S: Fresh black coffee of moderate strength comes through. A soft roastediness that feels more at home on a Schwarz then a RIS. So far no signs of "the lots of hops" as advertised on the label. Hopefully they will appear on the flavor because so far this was rather lackluster.

T: A nice deep roastiness opens thing in a smooth and refined manner. Deep and earthy with a nice presence of wet coffee grounds and wet charred grains along with bitter chocolate is also evident and appreciated. Dark fruit is found but only slight traces of its 10.0% is detectable. Things conclude with dried creamer notes, and a roasty lingering fade that was exceptionally smooth, with a moderate strength per style.

M: The mouthful was silky at first, before swelling to a nice creaminess upon the hold. The body is a bit lighter then anticipated with a lingering bitterness of burnt grains.

D: Drinkability was very smooth and easy. The 10.0% was not a factor. What it lacked in complexity it made up with its smooth drinking nature. I would definitely have this again and recommend it just for its drinkability factor. A good intro beer into the style.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt with light dry coffee notes and some black chocolate. Taste is also a good mix between some roasted malt with light dry coffee notes with some subtle bitter chocolate with some light lactose notes. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Well balanced classic imperial stout.

Look: Dark coffee color, no head, very light lacing

Smell: Very subtle smell, chocolate, malt, coffee

Taste: Up Front: chocolate, coffee, vanilla, slight smoke. inish: burnt toast, chocolate, slight alcohol at end

Mouthfeel: Slightly sticky and dry

Drinkability: This needs to be sipped like a cognac. One and done for me!

Overall Impression: Not my favorite R.I.S. It did taste better than the last one I had (maybe due to some cellaring) as the beer warms, more notes come through. I met Brian Boaks at the Philly Winter Beer Fest and he told me that the beer was aged a year before distribution.

I actually have traded to get a bottle of this as I had heard through a friend it was outstanding and needed to be tried, well needless to say that was all that I needed to jump straight into this one. Poured out of the bottle a deep inky dark black, completely opaque and looking like a dark hole to which no light will escape. Thick and viscous, it looked as though it was oil as it poured out. Really quite impressive and I knew I was in for a treat. A thin head of chocolate colored lace rose up out of it and never really got higher then a half and inch, but at the same time, never really got lower then that either. Rich tan colored lace trickled down the sides, and overall this had the look of a big full stout.

The aroma was very interesting and a little bit different than what I was expecting to be honest. Rich notes of burnt coffee and molasses were all over this, but as was a bitter hoppiness, very odd and seemed sort of misplaced, but I pushed through. There were some woody like alcohol notes laced throughout now as well, really pushing this forward and offering some nice depth. Hints of some dark obscure fruit coming up now as well, something like a plum or a raisin maybe. This carried over very well into the flavor with a good amount of cocoa coming in to play now. The alcohol was definitely noticeable in the flavor, however it was far from distracting. It was a rich earthy alcohol tone, not the harsh hot notes that would lend it to be a distraction. Lots of licorice and sugary notes coming up front now and being intermixed with a dark French roast coffee sort of flavor, if you can get that, interesting to say the least and definitely a good bit different. The feel was very nice, very full bodied with a good bit of carbonation sticking around long enough to get it that velvet like smoothness you look for in a good RIS. The finish was where it was at though. By the time the flavor moved on, a deep dark hop finish started to take over. A nice bit of pine like bitterness at first, then morphing into some nice bitter dark chocolate notes, before completely drying out and making you search for that next sip. Very well done and quite a bit different then what I was expecting.

Overall, for an under the radar stout, this was fantastic. I was quite impressed with the complexity in this one as well as the outstanding use of hops, especially in the finish. Really very well done and an outstanding version of the style. This was one of those that you just could not be disappointed in anyway with. I look forward to saving my other bottle for a little while to see what happens with this one, but if you see it around I would make a dash for it, this one looks like a goodie.

Pours a deep brown colour that is essentially black, with a thinner than expected tan head that leaves only spotty amounts of residue on the glass.

The aroma consists of chocolate (more so cocoa, actually), vanilla, coffee, earth, some wood, and a hint of alcohol.

The flavour is much like the aroma but lays off the sweetness a bit and brings in more of a harsh flavour: bitter coffee is definitely more in play here and the malt is less rugged and more burnt. Vanilla is still present but subdued a bit, and chocolate is relegated to a minor flavour for the most part. The finish has a nice bite. Mouthfeel is full bodied with a bit of a kick to it from the hotness of the alcohol and some creaminess as well.

This is a solid brew overall. Good flavour and nice overall balance to it. Boak's is definitely doing some nice things here in NJ.

From a brown 12oz. longneck pours a black-brown with 1/2" of cocoa foam head into a snifter. The head eventually settles, the carbonation was perfect for this style.

Big malty nose with earthy roast, chocolate, black currants, coffee, some grassy hops and a bit of alcohol as it warms. Very nice smell indeed. The flavor was even richer than the nose with robust malt, roastiness and even a nutty quality to it. Very well balanced and super smooth drinking stout. Smooth and creamy in the mouth, sweet to roasty and on to a nice bittering finish with some warmth. A solid Imperial Stout that's a pleasure to consume.
