Havlicek Czech Pilsner
Brewed Spring '06, consumed 09/06
Medium pour in a pilsner glass
Poured a clear straw with a small foamy quickly diminishing white head.
Smelt of moderate corn and faint flowery and grassy hops.
Taste was upfront mildly sweet white bread and light bitter grassy hops followed by a soft flowery hops and an odd bitter corn taste. Mouthfeel was light, semi-dry, lively carbonation, chalky and light to moderate astringency.
Overall, a Czech Pilsener that misses the mark. The essential flavors are there, but the palate ruins it.

Poured from the bottle, beer is a clear straw yellow color with a sudsy white head. Smell is sweet with malt, honey and no presence of hops. The taste seems a little off, maybe an old beer with no freshness date apparent. It has a sweet initial taste with a bitter finish and a metallic aftertaste. Mouthfeel is very light with not very much carbonation. The beer is drinkable, but not overly desirable.

I'm currenly not able to get onto the brewery website, therefore I have limited details on the beer. In time I'll check back. This beer also appears to be labeled differently than the others listed, so I'm assuming it's a different beer. Maybe it replace Rebel in our local market (bought at an MGM liqour). Ah, I was able to get on. Bottle label lists this a "Czech Pilsner"so I went with that, but it really might be more of a euro lager. This named drink isn't on the website in English.
Anyway, aroma begins with a sour malt quality then moves to a sweeter quality that includes a spiceness (like cinnamon). Then moves to a flatter sweet water quality with a touch of hops that seems to lack a nice Saaz quality (showed a little more spiciness as poured the bottom of the bottle). Not what it should be.
Darker gold. Water clear. Average sized white head with a rather quick settling.
Not a very bold flavor, with too much of a water presence. Mild only slight sweet malt beginnings. Malt becomes stronger as warms. Moderate bitterness in middle and stays the same through the finish. Takes on a fairly heavy dryness that dominates the end with a growing sourness as warms. Fairly simple.
Nice soft feel to carbonation. Appropriately light in body without being too thin.
I wanted to like this more than I did. A good Czech Pils is something to behold and this doesn't fit that.

16.9 oz bottle poured into a pilsener glass. Drunk immediately after and therefore compared to BB Burgerbrau.
Dark straw-golden color with white foamy head that recedes to a ring, much more lacing than the BB. Ok looking.
Clean bready malt aroma with a hint of citrus. The hops seem to make themselves known a bit more in the nose than the BB.
Straightforward and more crisp than the BB, but the bitterness is less bold. While the flavor is somewhat more complex, with some tart citrus notes mingling with the Saas hoppiness, the overall effect is more bland, especially the finish where a grainy aspect outlasts the hop bitterness...almost a macrolager/adjunct sort of flavor. The flavor leans too much towards the euro pale lager style. Mouthfeel is actually quite crisp and more fizzy than the BB.
While the individual components of this decent brew have their strong points, the overall effect is not one I would seek to repeat if other choices are available.

Clear gold..a little darker than expected.White foamy head laces nicely and drops to a film. Looks good in a Pilsner glass.
Smell is mostly buttery malt...hops are a bit faint.
Taste is very light...some semi sweet dough..crisp hop bitter...almost steely malt finish and aftertaste....all subtle..nothing is going bang! or even poof ...
Mouthfeel is pretty light..carbonation high.
Goes well with white fish dinner. This is just so light in every aspect...way too light to just drink alone, but Ok with food.

Poured from a 500ml bottle - no freshness date. An ornate blurb about the history, per capita drinking, etc...on the back label.
Looks to be brilliantly clear golden in color with a thin white head.
Smells like a wet rock pulled from the lakeshore; earthy, flinty.
A sharp rawness evokes that's difficult to describe. Faint malty sweetness, but it's there.
Saaz hops are present in the flavor with a somewhat transparent malt profile. I was hoping for a bready, sweet malt backbone found in good Czech Pils, but not here. The flavor dissipates quickly, making it difficult to pull anything noteworthy from it. Nice crisp somewhat dry finish.
Mouthfeel is a bit on the limp side. Light bodied for the style.
Drinkability is good. Very unintrusive and simple.
A good Pils that will definitely make a good gateway beer for lighter beer drinkers. Not much else to say. A good beer, but nothing Id buy again.

16.9 oz bottle poured into a weizen glass.
Pours a clear golden color with a 1 finger white head that dissipates quickly. Citrusy, lemon hop, toffee, and bready yeast aromas dominated by the citrus. Up front lemon taste followed by a light malt which waters down quickly in both flavor and mouthfeel with a slightly hoppy finish. Light defines the mouthfeel and drinkability, light carbonation, light bodied, light hops, & light malt. Not much to this beer, it is one of those beers you could drink a lot of at an outdoor gathering.

A: Rich and dark yellow-gold color with a smaller head of white foam. Medium to medium low carbonation. Some noteable lacing inside the glass.
S: Rich aroma of noble hops and buttery and grainy malts. Slightly sharp on the nose, yet still appealing though it's rather one sided.
T: Not bad. Mild grain flavors segway into the the malt and leave just enough time for the palate to recognize the hop presence before it's washed down. Some hay flavors linger, but are rather light and airey.
M: Refreshing and crisp. Lacks noteable carbonation yet still goes down smooth and stays enjoyable.
D: Not bad. I'd have another during the summer months. A fair offering in the Czech Pils Dept.

golden on the pour with a very light head that dissipates quickly, with the smell of mault and bread. carbonation is decent with nice bubbles continually comming form the bottom. Decent bitterness and this brew does very poor when not very cold. Not something I would have all that often, nor the first pilsner I would pick, nor second.

A very drinkable Pils, pouring a light golden body, with a slender white head, its got a sweet, bready aroma with a spicy Saaz bitterness. A slight cereal-like aroma is also present. Transparent golden color with a small whitish head. Very light-bodied and missing maltiness. Finishes with an appropriate spicy mildly bitter Saaz kick. Can get pretty bland and one dimensional.

Poured a light copper hue with a one and a half finger chunky white froth. There was very good retention and lacing.
The smell featured a light grainy malt with slight and seemingly tired herbal hop.
The taste consisted of a light doughy grain and a weak noble hop spice.
The mouthfeel was toward the fuller side of the style.
Overall a weak and relatively flavorless Czech Pils.

Appearance: traditional pilsner color with a touch of copper. No real head just small and fuzzy on the glass. Minimal lacing, in fact, no lacing what so ever.
Smell: has grain and malt smell with touch of sweetness. Not to much going on however.
Taste: has nice light malt characteristics and a slight grain flavor, barley maybe? Soft hop presence and mild carbonation and light body make this beer alright. Not a shabby pils by any means. Very drinkable and feels airy and delicate on the tounge.
I could hammer a few of these down on a nice warm day. For a light pilsner this has my vote. Better than any domestic pilsners that I have had, or that I can remember. Bottom line! middle of the road and drinkable.

By no means is this worth seeking out... however, at $1.25 for 16.9 ounces? not too shabby at all. Best served as cold as you can get it and perhaps a bit better straight from the bottle than decanted.... it does look pretty good on the pour with a big fluffy white head and a clear, golden, lager-type look to it.
Scents are muted, grainy and clean. Flavors are, well, pure lawnmower, Monday night football fodder. Not much in the way of depth and that's fine.
Easy to drink and refreshing.

Poors nice nice deep yellow. Nose is light with more malt then hops. The mouthfeel on this beer is very good for a pils. Taste is dominated by sweet malts and very light hopping. It has a great drinkibility and goes down easy. Price performer for someone not looking for a hoppy pils. A 16.9 oz @ $1.29 @ my local shop. Good introductory beer for non beer types.
On a subsequent bottle it had a very metalic tase and I fear it was old and flavors were not fresh but very flat. This one may have sat around a while.

bought a 550 ml bottle at odies big ten in lansing, michigan. ($1.79)
pours a deep copper with a thin head that disapates into nothing in about 5 minutes.
the aroma is malty with noble hops.
the flavor is malty, clean, hopsack, minerialness, lingering spice.
this is a great beer, and has a great price, goes down very easy on a hot day it really quenches your thurst. this has become my cheap alternative while still keeping true to beer snob inside of me.
