Pours a very nice looking brew. A jet black, completely vacuous color with a nice, thick tan head. The head stays throughout the drink as well.
Smell is very nice. There is a a lot of strong caramel smell to this beer. Very dark roasted malt smell too.
Taste is nice as well. It is a strong malt taste with good, dark roasted malt taste, almost burnt. The aftertaste is a shot of caramel that stays on the front of the tongue.
Mouthfeel is good too. Good thickness and very chewy.
Drinkability is good. This beer surprised me. I wouldn't call it a black lager. To me this tastes more like a porter or stout. It has a strong malt taste to it and very good going down. I was surprised at how much I liked this beer, but I would have it again if it was available.

Pours a nice deep crimson color (looks better when held up to the light) with a pretty thin head, aromas of caramel and even a little brown sugar with a light burnt hint as well.Taste has a bready kinda note to it with some roasted malt with a big Czech hop note in the finish makes the beer very clean and dry tasting.A little thin in the body but a pretty solid Czech lager,a nice find.

Appearance – This dunkel was of course dark and gave off pretty red tints along the edges. The head was modest but left a nice film on top of the liquid.

Smell – The roasted malts and burnt toast were mixed with a bit of coffee and maybe some brown sugar.

Taste – The dark notes from the nose pulled back at the taste. Some fruits kicked in at the finish that gave this lager an awkward twang.

Mouthfeel – This light to medium-bodied Dunkel left an off tangy sensation in the mouth.

Drinkability – I enjoyed the malt aspect of this lager but could do without the summer fruit character.

Bought this one on a whim, wasn't really expecting much from it but figured i'd try it out. Pours out black, with a finger size head. As others have said not very complex, but that doesn't make it a bad beer. Sligh metalic taste, makes me wish I hadn't read the reviews and hadn't pinpointed the taste. Felt pretty thin to me when drinking which I did not like. I've had better in this genre. Don't think I would buy this one again.

About average?....not terrible.

Appearance: Dim dark brown with a tiny bubbled soft tan lace.

Smell: Creamed coffee in the nose with hints of malt sweetness and faint roasted malt.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Medium body and crisp snappish bite on the tongue. Coffee accented from the dark malts with an causal malt sweetness that holds up the body. Suggestions of fig and other subtle fruit are perceptible ... quietly hopped just to offset the malt a pinch. A drying feeling leads the pallette to the finish with soft roasted malt taste.

Notes: Not bad at all, quite a appetizing dark lager that I would go back for time and time again. Made for a great lunchtime brew with hot pastrami on rye.

When this beer was poured into my glass, this beer had a small tan head with fine sized bubbles. The body was clear with a brown-reddish hue. The lacing was only fair on the sides of my glass with this beer. The flavor reminded me of burnt coffee and the mouthfeel was smooth.

17 picked up at the Coop yesterday for about $2.75.. poured into my Smokestack goblet...

tan 2 finger head takes a while to die back leaving picure perfect crusty lacing.. brew is pretty dark verging on black.. only when held to a light do I realize it is deep dark walnut brown and perfectly clear.

Aroma is closer to a schwarzbier than a dunkel... light roasty.. more toasty.. fairly clean malts.. no real hops to speak of.

Flavor is very good.. roasty malts and the toasted malts have the right amount of sweetness to remind me of chocolate.. subtle caramel.. body is thicker than expected for a brew of this ABV, but it isn't chewy.. the mouthfeel is fairly smooth with little bubble carbonation... I know I am going to rate this higher than the average by quite a bit.. but I think it is well made and I really like the subtleties in Dark European lagers... and the drinkablity is very nice.. smooth and tasty and makes me want another drink even though it is still 80 degrees and close to 1:00 am.

Helping the local liquor store clear out some old back stock beers, I came upon this one. At $1.95 for the half litre brown bottle, what the heck i'll give it a try.

The stuff pours a dark walnut-burgundy with some body, nearly two fingers of creamy tan colored head, looks nice. The head settles to just under a centimeter, fine bubbles in the carbonation, decent fine lacing.

Smell is of dark rich malts, actually smells like a concentrated malted milk like in a malt shop. I really love the smell of this brew even though I am way more fond of hops in beers that I frequent. Hops are on the low side here but balances the brew nicely. The taste is dark malt filled with a body much lighter than it appears, smooth creamy mouthfeel with almost no detection of alcohol.

Very easy drinking for a beer this dark, as it warms a bit you get some chocolate after notes, it's really quite a pleasant beer, much to my suprise. It's not great, but is is good...cheers!

As it spills from the bottle, a very deep blackberry color, the head impressive in size, spumous in structure, light beige in color and the remining lace a nice coating sheet. Nose is caramel sweet, malt laden, fresh and pleasant to the senses, sweet at the start, lots of malt, the top thin and a bit watery. Finish is mildly acidic, crisply hopped, dry but the “thin-waisted” feeling detracts much and leaves me lacking and the best I can do is “Average”, and that’s stretching it a bit!

Clear dark brown colored beer with a small brown colored head.

Smells of toasted grain and flowery noble hops. Chocolate and coffee aromas.

Starts out fairly dry with the taste of charred malt. Tastes of coffee with a medium level of bitterness.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall just an OK beer nothing special.

LIke the old style simplistic label. 500 ml bottle. Good looking dark beer dark brown, bordering on black small tan head, bubbly, nice looking in my pint mug. malty sweet aroma, slightly smoky ash in the back ground. very coffee like accent to the taste as described by others, dark coffee with hints of dried fruit, not much hops happening, dry ,quick finish leaves the impression of wateryness. Pretty thin on the palate, but that might just be the finish. A drinkable enough beer, but totally unremarkable.

This is not a bad beer by any stretch, but it's also not something I'd go out of my way for either. There is very little complexity but the dark malts do factor into the flavor, but weakly. This struck me as a fairly pilsner-like beer despite the darkness.

Burgundy appearance with a fizzy light tan head. Aroma was accented towards a coffee like acidity with light fruits in the background. Flavor had more bready notes with a little residual sweetness. Body was lighter actually medium but the flavors weren't enough. Weak finish. Easy to drink, easy to enjoy one of but I'm done after that.

Clear black with Burgundy highlights. Very fine off-white head settles quickly to a thin rim and some isolated islands of foam. Swirling rouses the head nicely, but it quickly retreats again.

Nose is crackery malt with an appetizing roasty edge to it. Nice Saaz hop notes provide some support, but the Saaz grassiness actually kind of clashes with the roasty/toasty notes.

Medium in the mouth with a nice initial roundness. Roast and hop contribute nice complexity and balancing bitterness. Becomes quite mineral in the midpalate which thins out the malt and dominates the finish.

Lowish level of carbonation is nice for the style. Quite drinkable if a bit unexciting.

Pours out a dark and clear amber/brown color with a thick off-white head. The aroma is full of toasted malts and light chocolates. A strong toasted malt flavor with a very sweet aftertaste. Some nutty and light fruit. A soft and medium mouthfeel. Pretty clean flavor, but a bit thin and watery. An interesting brew.

Pours a clear black, with a creamy light brown head, moderate lacing, light carbonation. Has a sweet malty smell with hints of chocolate. When you first taste it, its really good, creamy and chocolately. A touch of bitterness at the back of the tongue, but finishes extremely thin, like water, and leaves a metallic and dry aftertaste. Tastes great at first, but finishes pretty awful.

From the green bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black with a large tan head. Small dense bubbles fill the head.

The smell is of a sweet rose, lightly malty.

This beer is malty sweet with limited hops. It definitely isn't overdone. Cool, crisp and refreshing. Easy to drink but not overly unique. A good Czech beer.
