Bottle: Poured a dark black color stout with a medium size dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry coffee notes with some black chocolate notes. Taste is also dominated by some black chocolate with some dry coffee without any astringency. Body is average with good carbonation. Overall, the mix of coffee and chocolate notes was satisfactory with carbonation maybe a tad too strong for the style.

500ml bottle. Date bottled, January 2013, lot 482. Poured into a large wine glass, perhaps around 8-10 c, letting it warm while sipped slowly.

A: Dark brown/black body, completely opaque. Vigorous pour gives a 2 finger thick, frothy head, burnt caramel in colour, ends with nice lacing on top, good retention.

S: Sweet, lightly roasted malts, slight hops and perhaps light smell of alcohol on the nose.. (should be noted I'm fighting off a cold, so hard for me to smell much right now, so take what you will, but it for sure smells like a stout ;)

T: Slightly sweet malts up front with light hints of vanilla. Moves towards coffee bitterness, mixed in with some oak-y/sour/funkiness at the end.... (again, my tasting could be a bit off, on top of this being a light beer, so nothing jumps out)

M: At 4%, very light body, light carbonation, a little watery but again, is a light beer.

O: Overall, not having tasted the other Rang beers, I'd say this is an interesting variation but feel it misses a few marks. For a stout it is on the border of ABV, tasting closer to a porter, which I don't have a problem with, but I feel where the aged in oak barrels usually gives something to a beer (vanilla/bourbon), this one seems to be picking up more of the oak from the barrels than the bourbon flavours you're wanting, perhaps because the beer is so light. I also don't know how long these were aged for, or if like the Rang 10 was fermented, not aged, so hard to comment. Overall the beer is alright, worth trying if you're in the store starring at one, but not sure I'd include this in a trade.
