Bavarian Barbarian- Brown

A- Deep cloudy reddish brown with a thick foamy head.
S- Sweet vinegar, caramel, buttery shortbread, and vanilla.
T- Big sweet butter and caramel. Good shortbread malts appear with a slight oaky wood chip flavor.
M- Buttery, creamy, and a slight vinegary tart bitter finish.

Overall- A tad sweet and tart but worthy of trying.

Served in a pint glass. Beer was a dark brown color with some light reddish overtones. Had a one finger dirty white head and fairly active carbonation. Smelled of roasted nuts and malt. Taste was a hodge podge of malt, roasted nuts, earth, and oak. Rather sweet. Left an aftertaste of old oak and syrup in my mouth, not terribly pleasant.

On tap at the Bavarian Barbarian Brewery.

Poured a deeper brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, toasted nuts, toffee, and some chocolate. Tastes of toffee, nuts, roast, and caramel. Not too bad for a Brown Ale!

This brown ale pours a very dark amber somewhere in between maroon and brown. A very little amount of light, and many quick rising bubbles can be seen through the clear yet dark body. A two finger fluffy tan head dissipates, but leaves a nice coat and some sticky and spotty lacing through the session.

Sweet milk chocolate is the first characteristic I pick up in the nose. As the ale warms I get a hint of graham cracker. Some light smoke, like burnt sugar.

Semi-sweet chocolate cake up front. Lots of active carbonation bounces around. Very slight hop bite that balances the malts nicely. Nutty and roasty characters. Hints of honey.

The mouthfeel is a combination of a medium body that dances from the carbonation. Smooth and slick, but not watery.

This is a solid American Brown Ale. Definitely something that I would recommend to a buddy of mine that swears by Avery's Ellie's Brown. Definitely something that I'd go out of my way to get again when in the Billy's Port area.

Disclaimer: While there is not really any Wow! factor to Bavarian Barbarian's ale, you get the sense that there is a real attention to detail. Quality, relatively clean and simple beer w/out pretense.

Served cool in a pilsner glass at the brewery.

A - Medium chestnut brown w/ a light tan head measuring 1 inch w/ copper highlights at the base. Sporadic lace forms and cling well- nice head retention.

S - Malty toffee and caramel aroma w/ a hint of bready yeast esters and slightly toasty grain.

M - Smooth slightly sweet feel w/ a clean finish. Nutty yet hints of caramel w/ moderate carbonation.

T - A smooth brown that has toasty, sweet and gentle cereal grainy flavors and caramel sweetness that doesn't overpower other flavors like mild hopped bitterness..

D - Very quaffable a nice session worthy beer. I like a good brown, which is an easy pleaser. I can't wait to try more in the future from B.B. This is something I could share w/ friends by the pitcher.

On tap at Bavarian Barbarian Brewery on 3/22/08.

A - Clear chestnut-colored body with amber highlights and one finger of creamy off-white head that disappeared quickly. Excellent body clarity!

S - Nice sweet caramel malt nose with toffee notes and a bit of an earthy hop presence. Some mild chocolate notes also come out in the aroma.

T - Very malty, of course, with lots of caramel sweetness and some toffee flavor as well with just the slightest hop bitterness in the finish.

M - Pretty full bodied with a syrupy texture and medium carbonation. Very mild hop finish on the tongue. This one is quite sweet on the palate.

D - Solid brown ale that's well balanced. If you like sweet malty browns, then you'll love this one!

Delightfully fresh with a sinfully smooth mouthfeel. The color was a rustic brown with a subtle tint of henna when tilted toward the sunlight, luxurious and inviting . The rich malty characters matured to a velvety chestnut, perfectly balanced by the complex sweetness that disappeared quickly after doing it's amazing balancing act.The creamy tanning head complimented the beers flavor outfit. Beer flavor fashion at it's truest form to style. This brown ale entertained my senses and left me wanting more. This was smoooth drinking baby, smoooth drinking!

Dark reddish-brown with a medium light tan head. Subtle notes of sweet malt and nuttiness. Subtly sweet with a puncuation of roasty, nutty flavors. Hops are mearly supportive and simply complement the malt character. Mouthfeel is decent and well rounded. A bit to sweet for me to drink a lot of but a nice, simple, well-rounded English brown.
