Bavarian Barbarian 2x4 IPA is a very bitter IPA, but not in a bad way. The hops flavors in this beer dominant with resinous, oily pine up front and orange-citrus flavor as the beer warms up. The malt is properly thin so that with the bitterness can come through. Not the best IPA, but for the price, $3 for a bomber, I would definitely buy more

A- Pours a unfilterd bright orange look.

S- smell of hops nice grapefruit orange zest notes.

T- Citrus taste and orange zest. hops

M- Semi dry . hops and citrus notes linger through out sip.

D-Okay beer could be more slam with hops but it does have a good taste.

cheers...

A 650 mL bomber picked up at Wegmans in Billtown.

A: The IPA generated a 2+ finger head on pour, thick foam that left ample lace behind. The IPA has a yellow-orange tint, kinda like iced tea, that is translucent.

S: The nose starts off with a citrusy dose of hops. Those hops are quickly replaced by a caramel bready body that I'd best describe as musty.

T: While there is a noticeable hop presence, the ale is much mor emalt-centric. The bready caramel supports both the citrus hops and more of the mustiness that stood out in the nose. It's almost like the ale was dosed with brett recently. The flavor is different but not dry and funky. A very unusual flavor, one that I'm not big one.

M: The mouthfeel never quite gets over the mustiness. I hate re-using the same word time and again but it fits.

D: Decent but a cleaner malt and hop focus would be good for the IPA.

A: A hazy, orangey, ambery copper with a small white head that quickly settles. Barely okay lace, but lacking for an IPA.

S: Tangerine & citrus peel hops. Apricot – either from esters or hops. Lightly caramel sweet and slightly grainy malts. General impression is fruity. Faint bit of diacytel. Good stuff, but could be stronger.

T: Flash of juicy sweet & caramel malts hits first just a step before hops come in. Hops open with tangerine mixed with estery apricot. Hops quickly go strongly bitter with loads of citrus, some pine and pine, and a slight bit of spice. Middle sees some diacytel & more caramel grainy malt push through. End is woody, bitter hops that turn to resin & rind in the long lingering finish as the last bit of sweetness fades. Woody, resiny hops get a bit destructive on the palate by the end of the bomber. Hop focused even for an IPA, a bit one-dimensional, and possibly a bit much if you don’t crave hop domination.

M: Average / medium body & carbonation. Maybe a touch thin for the style & strength. Still there are limited few dextrins to chew before the hops take it distinctly, and almost, drying.

D: Average or so. There is plenty going on, but is doesn’t quite meld and is very unbalanced. I like the diacytel as a nice counterpoint to the earthy hop bitterness. Actually, the end and finish are rather scraping. It could use a tad more malt backbone.

decent with a nice amber color and a moderate head of white on the top. Even color and a nice carbonation throughout the session. The aroma was nicely balanced. Light pine hops, hints of bready malts and a light touch of caramel on the nose. Well balanced but nothing really jumping out at me. Smooth, even flavor here with the first sip identical to the last. Light caramel flavors that have overlapped with nice touches of hops. Light to medium body and an easy sessionability

Got from Growler at Grey Lodge in Philly as part of a Upstate Pennsylvania Beer Haul for Philly Beer Week.

Has a nice orange color with a modest head that leave very quick. Light lacing left on the glass as it went down.

Smells of hops, citrus and fruit. Not overwhelming but more than a clean nose.

Surely a hoppy beer. A little watery for my liking but front end hops are prominent and overall a nice basic IPA. Nothing extra special but then again, nothing in the way of this being a good PA IPA.

Mouthfeel is a nice coating and the hops and alcohol balance nicely. Fruits are there but quickly fades to the alcohol and hops.

Overall a nice IPA.. easy drinking and not overwhelming in any way. Then again. I like a little overwhelming in my IPA's so take that for what it's worth.

Appears an orange toned amber with a fluffy, off white cap that slowly fades into a Foamy head that settles to one corner of the glass. Scattered bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of brach's orange caramel candies with a touch of herbs.
Taste is of the aromas with a bitter bite ronding out the finish.
Mouthfeel is of bitter orange and pumelo zest along with a soapy, cilantro zip that tingled the tastebuds.

22oz. bottle poured into a nonic. Thanks to kegatron for the bottle!

(A)- Pours an orange colored hue. Produced a giant fluffy white head with a retention that just wont dissipate. Mountains of fluffy lace clumped all over the place.

(S)- A big juicy burst of lemon/lime citrus. Mild pine. The citrus is all over the place.

(T)- The same burst of lemon/lime citrus with an almost woody pine bite in the middle. Finishes mildly sweet.

(M)- A good crisp carbonation level. A really nice balance too of citrus, pine, and bittersweet components.

(D)- Wow, this was a surprise for me. A great IPA actually. A great look and smell and a solid backbone for the style. This exceeded my expectations in a style quickly starting to bore me, but this was an exception to that.

A: This one pours a slightly hazed orange color with a finger or so of white head.

S: Smells quite citrusy with a lot of lemon rind and orange, maybe a touch of tangerine. Unfortunately, there is a definite butter aroma to the nose. Some bread and maybe floral hop notes are also present.

T: Lots of bready malt with a subtle hop flavor. Lemon, orange, and bitter pine with floral hop notes to it. Quite buttery which is not pleasant in the slightest. There's a weird herbal note to the beer that I cannot exactly pinpoint.

M: The body is medium with a moderate level of carbonation.

D: If nothing else, this brewery has a great name. However, this beer wasn't so great.

A-Lightly hazed, golden kissed copper with a medium off-white head that reduced to a thin cap and left spotty lace.

S-Spicy, bitter, fruity hops up front with underlying sweet biscuit malt lying underneath. Not overly aromatic but decent enough.

T-Fairly assertive spicy bitterness up front with spicy herbal and citrus notes dominating. The underlying malt presence is supportively sweet but not overwhelming. While this is certainly a hop forward IPA the hop character doesn't quite work for me.

M - Medium bodied with long lingering hop bitterness and a drying finish.

D -Dry, and quite bitter and a good effort overall but it just doesn't push my buttons quite right. A brew that doesn't have anything wrong but isn't "right" for me either.

My brother brought me a few down from Williamsort and we shared a tasting of a few bombers...

Poured from the bottle a golden amber with frothy head that dissipates quickly.

Smell is a kick of fruity, tangy hops followed by a bit of biscuity malt flavors.

Taste is a big hippy front, combination of fruity, piney flavors followed by a mild roasts malt, hints of biscuit.

Mouthfeel is good for a bitter Ipa like this, just enough carbonation with flavors clinging the tongue well after a quaff.

Quite drinkable, I'd love to try this one on draft.

This is my first beer from Barbarian Brewing Company. I had heard very good things about this brewery but I consider this to be an average beer, There are hops but this still has a watered down taste to it. Nothing exciting going on just an average IPA. I am still hoping for good things from this Brewery and wish them the best of luck.

thanks to carlos for sharing this during the Memorial day brew. Poured chilled from the 22oz brown bottle into a tumbler.

A - The color is of apricot with a slight haziness and thin off white head which makes some lace on the glass, the bead is fine

S - The aroma has mild apricot and floral notes w/ a slight diacetyl and gentle pear ester with a hint of pine and tangerine

M - The feel has a basic bitter sweet texture but comes off with a tang and slight caramel sweetness in the middle , the ale has a moderately high level of astringency and feels drying in the finish

T - The taste has mild lemony and subtle orange rind-like hop qualities with a pithy aspect that gives the astringent taste after sweet creamy malt. The flavor has a citrus and lemon that pervades the flavor after the initial taste and the quality is lasting after the finish

D -I appreciated the chance to try this bottle, but think one try is enough. It has too much hop astringency to be truly drinkable IMO - it is worth a try, but not outstanding

A - Pours a small white head that is gone before you know it. In it's wake it leaves some trails of lace. The beer is a thick golden orange.

S - The aroma is very nicely done. It's a combination of citrus and rye spiciness with a hint of caramel.

M - Medium-full in body with adequate carbonation. This beer leaves a sticky, resinous feeling from the hops.

T - This is a pretty hoppy brew, for sure. The caramel malts kick off the brew and abruptly muted as the citrus kicks in. The citrus flavor then melts into a spiciness from the rye. A long lasting bitterness finishes off the taste.

This is a solid IPA. I'm glad they are using this beer to replace their old Weldspatter IPA.

on tap at hawthornes in philly

Pours a hazed auburn brown color, thick fluffy white head, nice retention with patches of lacing along the glass.

Pine and citrus hops, bit of resin, thick caramel and bread notes with sweetness, almost no presence of alcohol.

Bitter piny hops up front, hints of citrus pith as well. Some grapefruit and orange moves into sweetness with apricot and pear. Thick malted backbone is prevalent with caramel and toasted bread, a bit earthy. Finishes hoppy and dry.

Medium bodied, mild carbonation, sticky and dry. Drinks pretty well - I felt like this almost had an English feel due to the heavier biscuit malt and caramel tones. Definitely more malted sweetness than hop profile.

Out of a brewery fresh growler and into my shaker glass. 2x4 appears a hazed medium amber color with a good inch or so of fluffy off white foam. The head leaves a nice sticky lace in its wake with each sip. Nose and flavors are of resinous pine, caramelized malts, toasted bread, white grapefruit juice, bitter lemon peel, tangerine, orange, floral, a bit spicy. A tad better than medium bodied for an the style and amply carbonated. Finish is slick with a lingering bitterness. Really nice overall.

This beer poured out as a nice clear copper color with a strong white head on top. The smell of the beer is much hoppier than I expected. There is plenty of pine and citrus on the nose. The taste of the beer follows right along with that. Big amounts of hopes used in this brew. I really like it. The mouthfeel of the beer is almost medium bodied with a solid carbonation. Overall this beer is quite good and would like to have it again one day.

Pours a pale golden/yellow with a nice 2-finger white head that falls slowly while leaving lots of splotchy lace. There are a ton of floaties in this beer.

The smell is sweet and citrusy.

The taste is bitter, more of the citrus but it just taste wrong or something, it's not very pleasant and leaves this as a long, lingering after-effect,

Mouthfeel is medium and decently carbonated.

Drinkability is not good because of the taste and it's lingering aftertaste. I hope this isn't the way it's supposed to taste. I wonder if the thousand floating bits are supposed to be there?
