Visited this establishment on a recent trip to LA
6/6/10
This location has two parts to it, inside and an outdoor patio. We hit it up on a beautiful day and opted to eat outside. All tables have umbrellas to shade you from the sun and you overlook Universal City Walk. I hadn't had any of Karl Strauss brews before, so I was interested in what they had to offer. They had a decent selection ranging from Stouts, to DIPA's, to Hefe's. A little something for every one. These are pretty decent beers to sit with for lunch, though not the best of what the CA beer scene has to offer.
Food was deliscious! I mean, I can honestly say that I have yet to hit a brew pub where the food disappointed. A couple of us got different variations of the mac and cheese - and damn if it isn't a good plate of mac n cheese!
Our waiter was an entertaining guy though a touch slow at times - I think that I floored him being a female ordering the DIPA and Stout. *shrug* I like beer with kick!

The prices at this location were... a bit pricey. This was City Walk, so I expected prices to be higher.

Upper level on the city walk, smack dab in the middle near the squirting water fountain. Up the stairs to an outside patio. Walk inside to find a oval bar to the right and main seating area with booths and tables to the left. Leather (maybe) upholstery, wood tables, and stone- tiled walls with kegs and grain scattered about the room. Sat near the bar. Staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Went during happy hour (M-F 4-6:30 pm) where pints are $4 and select appetizers are $5. Had the Belgian IPA and Black Rye IPA. Both good, but not amazing, and served much too cold. Had the crispy calamari and buffalo wings. Both were good and the portions were generous.

Advice - go during happy hour, see a concert, watch all the tourists.

Found this place somewhat by accident while visiting Universal City, although it's impossible to miss. It is located upstairs from one of the hubs on the main drag. Valet or theme park overpriced parking are the only options, although getting your stub validated does make it much cheaper.

This Strauss location has a patio/beer garden and the inside is very open. The oval-shaped bar is on the immediate right with a spacious seating area taking up the rest of the space. There is a chalkboard that describes all of the available beers. In addition there is a 6-beer sampler available.

Karl Strauss in general goes outside of the brewpub-safe styles and this location is no different. They do have their standard offerings on tap and in bottles but additionally had some seasonals and unique offerings such as Off The Rails, a Schwarzbier and Tower 10 IPA to name a few. The beers were all above average.

Our bartender was very personable and knew a lot about beer to boot.

We did not try any food on the visit.

Overall I don't know if this place is worth visiting in and of itself but it is a no-brainer for a beer lover visiting the theme park or City Walk.

I visited this location the weekend after thanksgiving with my wife and brother. I went in knowing that its a chain brewpub so I wasn't expecting a whole lot from the place but I was pleased with the place over all.

The atmosphere is fairly decent they have a large balcony seating area out side if you like but it was a little cold to be out there the day we went so we sat inside. As you go in the front door theres an oval bar to the right that can sit about twenty people. We sat at regular table in the dining area they have kegs and casks along with carboys of grain around as decorations.

To me the service was average the people did their job for the most part. Our server did mess up my brothers order by bringing out a chicken sandwich instead of a chicken salad but he fixed it without any issues. It seams like they make substitutions with their beer sampler as the table behind me subbed out four of the six beers for different ones with out any problem. The servers didn't really seam to know much about the beer other than whats printed on the menu.

I will say that they do have a pretty good selection of food and beer to choose from. The food selection is fairly average with most brewpubs a decent list of appetizers, salads, burgers and sandwiches, and entrees. They also have ten of their beers on tap with it looking like three of them rotate out with seasonals and special brews.

Now as far as the quality of their food and beer its fairly average. The food is pretty good me and the wife got burgers while my brother got a salad. Our burgers were good and cooked the way we wanted but nothing mind blowing. The beers ranged from good to just ok.

Overall its a decent place to grab a bite to eat and drink some beers if you find yourself wandering around the City Walk. Like most everything else in LA its a little more pricey than most brewpubs.

Visited in the afternoon, 11/26/07. Our waitress was nice and attentive. She had little beer knowledge other than what she had learned by rote, but did ask the bartender about one of my beer questions. She also brought me a free sample. Yay! Ten taps is a nice selection, but their beers range from mediocre to all right, so take it for what it's worth. Food was better than the beer, as seems to be the case at many brewpubs. Place was quiet during my visit, though I'll bet it's different on weekends. This really is the only beer lover's choice at CityWalk.
