This is an excellent kellerbier.

Pale copper, it has medium off-white head slowly shrinking.

Aroma is nice, rich yeasty bread, bread crust, herb, lemon.

Taste is juicy, yeasty bread, herbs, hint of lemon with a full body and full but lively feel.

A new arrival at the local good beer store... little did I realize it's also almost a year old having been bottled in December of 2013. Hmm.

A -- Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a dense, slow settling, off-white head that remains persistent throughout the drink.

S -- Light bready and yeasty malts up front with some light caramel.

T -- Great bready, melanoidin malts up front that start mildly sweet and blend into a soft bread crust character. Some mildly spicy hop bitterness in the finish that lingers into the aftertaste. Just what I expect from a southern German beer.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a light-medium body.

O -- Great color, rich maltiness that can't be found outside Bavaria, smooth and satisfying -- even at near its expiration.

09/02/13 On tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. New to this style...but I'm on board. This has a lot going for it. Not for a newbie, but try it as a flight or take the leap if you know your depth.

Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into a Duvel tulip. Bottled 12/20/13.

Look - Hazy dark brown amber; almost opaque. Thin half finger of head and lots of streaky lacing.

Smell - Smells a tad adjunct-ish if I really strain my nostrils, but the overarching aroma is fresh grain accented by citrusy aroma and clove

Taste - Rich and malty sweet with some nice fruity jam overtones, a slightly bitter hop aftertaste, and a very clean finish. I see people say this one finishes dry, but I didn't get that from this one. Interesting; the months of age on this one might be the culprit there.

Feel - This one drinks really darned easily but hits your stomach with some weight, so be careful. It's not heavy in the mouth, but it is in the gut.

Overall - An enjoyable German brew, really easy to drink, though I wouldn't call it sessionable. It's filling!

Poured from 500mL swing-top bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: very dark golden hue with a relatively haze-free body and a super strong effervescence. Head pours two fingers of pillowy ivory foam with good retention. Attractive!

Smell: richly grainy malt aroma with a nice aged character. Simple but very well put-together.

Taste: quite grainy with a little sweetness and a hint of noble hops. Bitterness is low but this beer remains balanced. This beer manages to be rich without going over the top.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: this is a highly drinkable and flavorful brew. Probably the best kellerbier I've had.

Poured from the bottle into a half litre Bierkrug mug. Bottled Dec 20th 2013.

Thick fluffy and large off white vanilla head, slight tan and toffee like colored. Body is a nice toffee brown caramel to chestnut, with a big thick pour out of the bottle. Real nice looker here in a mug, and fitting well.

Great nose on this. Light toffee with lots of light crackly caramel. Good amounts of toasty barley and dry yeast and grains. Rich and light, almost flakey like a pie crust. Barley action takes to dry brown bread and pumpernickel but sweeter.

Palate delivers. Light toffee malts with a great crisp grain action more towards brown bread. Big dry aftertaste with a sweet chew to go along so not to dry out your palate. Warmth brings out a bit of fig and light raisin, but without the sugary fruit sweetness, more towards baked bread. Even some banana like esters show up.

Overall, even at this bottling age this keller is delivering nicely, great stuff.

Kellerbier is a style I am yet to review so for this momentous occasion I purchased the best Kellerbier I could see at Plonk! And soon I will sup on the nectar of the Gods... or something along those lines. For those not familiar Kellerbier is one of the oldest Lager styles dating back to the middle ages where the coolest place to ferment Lagers were underground kellers (cellars). It is a beer that is unfiltered and unpasteurised (Louis Pasteur had yet to figure out how time travel works) as such it is how the Germans say naturtrüb!

Poured from a 500ml swing-top bottle into a Stein.

A: Yes, indeed, an interesting drop - body is a naturtrüb (naturally cloudy) sepia with a light white lace on top. Was actually expecting more of a straw/amber body but I guess there is quite a bit of variation with this style.

S: Aroma is even more intriguing: typical Weizen banana mixed with Lager malt grains, caramel and some bread notes. There is an earthy/grassy hop presence lurking in the background as well. Quite thrown off by this unexpected scent... in a good way.

T: A melange of the above aromas - banana, malt grain, caramel and heady bread yeast. There is a nice body as well [but we'll talk about that next right?] along with lemon and grass hop notes. This is a real mix of Lager and Weizen, with a dry but slightly bitter finish.

M: Heavier than expected (from the ABV) with a medium body and creamy carbonation.

D: I really had no idea what I was getting in to with this Kellerbier - it has a great mix of Lager and Weizen, which I'm really digging, and at 5.3% ABV although it is above what constitutes a "session beer" (tasty Ales with a specific gravity at or below 1040º or 4.1% ABV) it has the aspect of making me want another... and another, and another... until I have run out of money and have to vacate the "establishment" (pub). A solid effort from a brewer I've never heard of and a style I've never tried.

Food match: A beer with both Lager and Ale characteristics makes for a good all-rounder when it comes to food matching. With this particular brews lemon hop note seafood is a sure-fire winner though.

Zwick'l pours a rich oaky tan color with a medium head of barely off white froth

The nose is fantastic with nice biscuity malt and just a hint of grass with some background molasses

This beer gives me a fresh bread taste with slight tropical citrus fruit notes and a mild malty finish with a hint of honey

The is a mild effervescence that lingers a bit on the palate but all in all this goes down easy and is a smooth drinking sessionable brew

Poured into a Fremont pint glass. Pours a rich medium to dark coppery amber with a two finger white head with great retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of biscuity, slightly toasted malt, hint of wheat and mild grassy hops. Flavor is slightly sweet biscuit, lightly bready malt and light grassy hops, nicely integrated. Medium bodied with nice peppery carbonation. Light flavored, but really pleasant malt profile and a deft amount of grassy hops. Lingering semi-sweet malt and hops finish. This was very enjoyable and could win me ovre to the idea of session beers. This would be quite nice to sit and sip for a long period of time on a warm day. There is a hint of oxidation in this, which is apparently why this style is rarely exported, meant to be drunk fresh. This was still very enjoyable and makes me want to try a fresh one.
