This and Pittsford are the two best Wegmans in the Rochester area for beer, however Penfield has the best refrigerated section of them all. Aside from Beers of the World, Wegmans is the best place to go for beer in Rochester and is less expensive (though has a smaller selection) than BotW. There are belgians, east coast and west coast brews, german beers, irish, italian, english, mexican, and so on. It seems like the selection is getting better all the time. I always feel good about supporting Wegmans, they are the best grocery store period. Thanks Wegs for setting the trend that other grocery stores are now beginning to follow!

This is the Wegmans that I grew up buy and shopped at until I left home years ago. While visiting my mom over Christmas she told me that they redid the beer section and now have all sorts of weird stuff there now. Sounded good to me so I had to make a visit and see for my self. One of the highlights for me is that they get growlers from Custom Brewcrafters and Rohrbach to me thats just cool picking up a growler from a grocery store. For a grocery store they have an excellent selection of craft beers and imports. Sure it doesn't stand a chance when compared to Beers of the World but nowhere in Rochester does.

Ok, it's time for a reality check here. I've rated the Canandaigua Wegmans higher because ... well they have a better selection (still have Ithaca Eleven and Twelve in stock) and because it's my childhood Wegmans and Canandaigua is the home of Wegmans and the Wegmans family, but really Wegmans has a decent selection, which is amazing by grocery store standards, and sub-par by bottle shop standards.

Even without leaving the Rochester area, any of the Beers of the World stores just absolutely demolish this place in any reasonable measure of quality or quantity for a bottle shop. If we expand this to Western New York in general, any Wegmans is absolutely smoked by the Beverage Center in Ithaca ... taking it larger than that this place can't touch my local shop in Denver, or a few others that I frequent without even getting into truly world-class bottle-shop territory like Liquor Max in Fort Collins or Liquor Mart in Boulder.

Point here being, it's time for some perspective on a Wegman's shop with an 'A' rating.

Is it a grocery store with Goose BCS and Great Lakes Blackout? Yes.

Is it a grocery store with Ithaca and Ommegang bombers, and weyerbacher 4-packs? Yes.

Outside of that they are lacking in several departments that are somewhat unforgivable if you are considering this as a beer store.

Firstly there are absolutely no staff at Wegmans who know anything about beer, can point you in the direction of a good beer, or have any idea about beer distribution, etc. Basically all the things I need to know as a beer enthusiast.

Secondly, they lack any gems. By which I mean that outside of the back-stock of Ithaca Eleven sitting on the shelves in the canandaigua location, there is absolutely nothing that made my heart skip a beat at on the shelves. This is the East Coast, where Cantillon and De Struisse flows like water. To a MST sour-monster like myself ... it's just not really that hard to impress me out here.

Wrapping this up, my point is, as a grocery with a great beer selection, wegmans is tops. That you can pick up a bomber of BCS along with a live lobster ... is really what makes Wegmans the store that it is. As a bottle shop? It's criminal to rate this any higher than a C+.

This is the only Wegmans I go to any more. This is the first one that I saw that really expanded their beer selection. They did it this summer, because I took the opportunity to get caught up on Hefeweizens. They had a bunch of 5cl bottles for less than three bucks-- good ones, too. It's odd that they didn't start this out at the flagship store in Pittsford, but I prefer this store anyway. It's not as crowded and you don't have to deal with the I-can-walk-right-in-to-you-because-I'm-so-rich-I-don't-care crowd. Also, this store doesn't have that crazy tile in the Market Cafe that makes for really rough riding with the shopping cart. I digress. There are still some beers at the Penfield Wegmans that I haven't had yet. They were the first ones to start carrying Great Lakes. They should be carrying Rohrbach's really soon. The last time I was there, they had Virgil's root beer in mini kegs. Speaking of root beer, they also carry Iron Fireman here. They have Sam Adams Chocolate Bock here for about three bucks cheaper than it is at Beers of the World. There is a good selection of beer glasses there, too. I think the Holt Road Wegmans in Webster has kind of caught up with this one, but if I'm shopping for beer in Webster, I'm gonna hit Hegedorns. This is just a convenient place to get beer.

Someone mentioned this morning that there was a sign at this Wegmans touting an expanded beer selection, so I had to check it out.

Yikes. The sign: 200 new styles from 35 countries. Five or six display stands, each about seven feet wide, five rows high, plus endcaps on each end, are overflowing with breweries that most grocery stores have never even heard of. Plus, the corner of the store that this occupies is also lined with two more shelves of the delicious beverage.

Local favorites like Middle Ages were available (although only a select few styles), along with a great selection of other small brewery treats. Too many to even list. One that I was happy to see: Stone's Arrogant Bastard at $4.49 for a 22 oz.

The cases (though not the surrounding shelves) are arranged by locale. East Coast/Micro takes up a good two displays, followed by West Cost/Micro, then on to Belgium, Asia, Mexico, Germany...am I missing any? I noticed Unibrou's stuff on the Asia shelf; maybe I just missed the Canada sign.

Regardless, the selection is a great rival for Hegedorns, and another very strong alternative for Beers of the World based on both price and, depending on where you live, convience of location. Plus, you can pick up your craft beers in the same store as the rest of your shopping, as Wegmans is the best grocery chain in the area (and one of the top in the country).

If you're anywhere near this store, you owe it to yourself to check it out!
