Pints on tap at Three Tides.
Of the three APAs I've had from Marshall Wharf (Tug and Marian are the other two) this is, by far, my favorite. The Sorachi Ace and Citra hops give Ace Hole a very seductive nose and flavor profile that leans predominately toward tropical fruits (lemon, mango, passion fruit and guava). It makes a pleasant change of pace from the orange, tangerine, grapefruit and pine-y flavors that dominate the majority of American pale ales and IPAs. There is an APA appropriate crispness and hop bite but not the huge hop punch of most American IPAs and some APAs. It has a medium body with modest but entirely adequate carbonation. At 5.9% ABV it isn't exactly a session beer but it also doesn't pummel you if you have a few pints. More please!

The combination of Sorachi Ace and Citra is very interesting. This beer is very unique and I can't think of a similar tasting pale ale or IPA. The Sorachi Ace gives it a bit of a spicy/vegetal flavor that is odd, but not unpleasant. Fresh crisp green pepper straight from the garden comes to mind. I drank this beer poured from a 2 day old can. Not sure if the flavors change over time.

From the 16 fl. oz. can dated 5/14/16. Sampled on May 22, 2016.

It pours a slightly hazy straw yellow with lots of carbonation bubbles heading upwards to a tremendous but soft cream colored head.

Big aroma of toasted bread, toasted biscuit, citrus, and herbs. Rosemary maybe?

Medium body.

Easy drinking toastiness with a vibrant bitter hop finish. But still balanced overall. Hop heads should like it even though it is not an IPA or DIPA.

Starts off with a carmel and citrus flavor and ends with notes of dill.

From a can.
Look: Very thick head, beer amber brown in color. Head leaves good lacing on the glass.
Smell: Citrus with some malt/caramel.
Taste: Bready at first, finishing with bitterness, the citrus is mellowed in the tase and somewhat marmalady.
Feel: Good effervescence and mouthfeel.
Overall: Satisfying but not great.

Poured from a tallboy can into a shaker pint, the beer is a rich, crystal clear, copper gold coloring with a slow roll of carbonation bubbling in the body, and a foamy, light, off-white head that laces the glass as you drink. Aromas of grass, cedar, subtle blueberry, sticky and dank moss highlights, subtle citrus notes, and a rich caramel backbone. Very balanced, but still with a hoppy, sticky lean. The flavors are resinous and dank forward, with pine pitch and tassel notes, rich caramel backbone, subtle grapefruit and tropical fruit highlights, and a sticky, wet grass and pepper spice blend at the tail end. Very bitter and resinous throughout, lingering on as a solid aftertaste. You know your palate is wrestling some big hop profiles when you drink this one. The body is robust, but the dryness and bitterness provides an edge to the otherwise smooth feel. The finish is dry, resinous, and with a decent linger. This is a really solid APA.
