The Beers of California

#76

Bottle Date: None

A: Hazy pale golden with a white, micro bubble head of foam. The bubbles leave a rim and a trace lace on the glass. There is a trace amount of lace on the rim and the glass.

S: Strong lemon and orange zest which floats on top of a honey wheat base.

T: Honey and orange juice sweetness ushers in moments of wheat and cracker maltiness. There are hints of clove and black pepper spice. The finish is clean and earthy. Simple, sweet and well executed.

M: Light feel and somewhat chewy. Could have used a bit more carbonation to add to the brew's lightness and brightness.

O: A sweet wheat ale and a refreshing session brew for hot summer days. Picked this up to celebrate the start of spring, which is really the start of Southern California's Summer.

Our local grocery recently added a craft brew section, and I recently chose this brew for one of my infrequent beer indulgences. Wish I hadn't. The beer starts promising, with a pleasant, hazy straw-yellow color and plenty of head. The experience went downhill from there. Despite the heavy smell of citrus and the tangy, well-carbonated mouthfeel one would expect from this style, the taste was, at best, unremarkable. Nothing stood out for me, neither wheat nor citrus. In fact, it was rather like a very weak lemonade with some alcohol thrown in. Very disappointing, and not a brew I will be having a second time.

A - A good looking wheat bear. Light in color and a little cloudy, but nice.

S - Orange smell is very strong. Couldn't smell anything else, so I knew I was in for full fruit flavors.

T - As citris beers go, this one was a bit sour. The orange taste didn't blend in very smoothly, and came off a bit too robust for my liking.

M - The citris taste lingers in the mouth. It's probably the most prevalent thing about the beer.

O - Great beer for a summer's day, but not for other occasions.

I cracked one of these open on a 90 degree day and boy was it refreshing. I was a little scared that it would be a very intense orange flavored beer. Something similar to magic hat number 9 with the intense apricot flavor, instead it was very mellow and blends very well with the wheat. The beer had a nice creamy head to it and a hazy straw like color. The aroma was a subtle orange flavor with some bready notes. The flavor was a slight orange with the wheat notes of the beer being very dominant. The beer has a lighter mouth feel from adding oranges early in fermentation. I would recommend this beer for any hot day.
