Bottle (2011)

Hangar 24 Brewery
Redlands, CA

Cloudy orange with lighter, closer to yellow, edges. Thin white head. Not much lacing down the glass.

Sweet apricots in the aroma, along with some bready malt character and grass--pleasant but incredibly faint.

The flavor is a combination of apricot flesh and skin, bready malts, and wheat. This beer is certainly easy drinking, though it simply doesn't pack a ton of flavor.

Medium bodied. Very easy to drink.

A very simple, and I hate to say boring, apricot wheat beer. Good enough, especially on a scorching hot Redlands summer afternoon.

A huge thanks to Chris (Cavery) for this special beer he was able to obtain and send me. Cheers buddy!

2011 bottle.

Appearance – Pours a faint hazy hay color into a tulip. About a finger of white head is achieved with a quick pour that dispels almost immediately leaving almost no lacing.

Smell – Honestly, I mainly get wheat. Lots and lots of wheat (and grain). Just a hint of apricot aroma is present.

Taste – As I was expecting from the nose, wheat is the dominant flavor. The apricot comes in midway but still has to fight the wheat/grain to make an appearance. A relatively one dimensional brew that disappoints in the sense that it boasts of using inordinate amount of apricots in the brewing process, but one is left feeling cheated. A nice tasting wheat ale, but again, not up to what I expected.

Mouthfeel – Medium bodied, slightly creamy, plenty of carbonation, finishes a hint dry.

Overall – I was very happy when Chris sent this. I most certainly wanted to try this seeing as I love fruit infused beers (if done correctly). This one, sadly, was not. While this is by no means a “bad” beer, it just is mediocre at best. The apricot flavor and aroma is so slight that one almost feels forced to acknowledge that said fruit was used in the making of this wheat beer. The wheat and grain really is quite dominate in the flavor, though the drinkability is quite high for a relatively lofty ABV. Would have on tap with a meal, but not worth trading for IMO.

Label is different than what is pictured above.

A: Pours a hazy straw yellow with a finger thick white head which fades to the rim leaving some splotchy lace.

N: Fruity (apricots - surprise), some lemon/citrus, wheaty grains, faint sweetness and tartness.

T: Wheaty with some very faint chalk. Apricots prominent along with some stone fruit pits. Mildly sour with trace lemon and grass and yeast.

M: Light body and medium carbonation. Finishes with yeasty wheat and subtle apricot.

O: Labeled as a wheat-wine style, but correctly identified above as a pale wheat ale. Would like to try fresher as the fruits seem somewhat faded.

On tap @ the bruery provisions

Look: Murky yellow in color and semi translucent with a 1/8 inch white head and some spotty lace

Smell: Very light apricot nose with just a touch of wheat not impressed

Taste: Ok this beer flavor wise is a straight miss. It has a soapy water kind of taste with just the slightest amount of apricot. If I did not know this had apricot in it I would never had guessed thats how lack luster it is

Mouthfeel: Thin body and mild carbonation and a touch dry

Overall: Not Hangar's best offering

Consumed at the brewery.

A properly cloudy light lemon yellow with a fine white head that provides barely-there lace.

Fruity, wheaty aroma. Tangy.

Flavor is sweet apricot, soft powdery yeast and restrained wheat tang. Nice and balanced. Low/no bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with adequate carbonation.

A nice wheat wine with no apparent flaws.
