12oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

A- pours a deep amber color with a one finger creamy off-white head that retains long after the pour, laving some lace behind

S- malt dominant aroma with toasted bread, biscuit and cracker, trace of caramel. Herbal/floral hop

T- brown bready malt with some toasted character, grassy/herbal hop, apple, finishes dry and clean with light lingers of chocolate malt

M- medium body with moderate prickly carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a clean dry finish

O- easy drinking and malt forward, for the most part

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #73 (Feb 2013):

Not the cleanest Altbier but it does have all of the bells and whistles of one. Not exaclty a beer style that brewers are lining up to do and one that does take a bit more care being the spectrum or character of the beer is pretty narrow. Hangar 24 lands well within the style, a good choice if you are looking to brush up on the German Styles.

STYLE: Altbier
ABV: 6.0%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round

LOOK: Dull brassy color, exceptional looking head

SMELL: Toasted bread, slightly biscuity, dried hay, crackers, herbal hop, clean

TASTE: Very malty, massive bready character, brown malt, dried grass, faint apple, toasty, herbal hop, light spice, breath of alcohol, toasted grain drying finish

A sweet, slightly crisp, slightly bitter, appropriately malt-dominant Alt. There's really not much to say about this somewhat turbid, orange-brown beer: it's a very solid, very conventional alt. It doesn't have a lot of depth, in terms of character or flavor, and it's even a bit thin in the mouth, but it basically subscribes to the general premise of Alts. It's drinkable, if a little malt-dry—mostly toasted biscuit, and a bit of nut—and its hop-bitterness wavers in the wrong direction just a tad—not cleansing as much as it should; lingering more than it should—but it's an altogether competent, drinkable brew.

Pours a dark amber color with a tight, off-white head that leaves little bits of lacing.

Smells of toasted malts with a bit of dark fruits.

Tastes of the toasted malts, dark fruits, and a bit of earthy hops. Toasted malts lead off with notes of toffee, chocolate, toasted bread, and a bit of caramel. A bit of nuttiness comes through before some figs and raisins. Toasted notes give way to some earthy and grassy hops. Fairly sweet overall. Finishes with a bit of toasted malt.

Mouthfeel is medium-light with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is pretty tasty with a nice combination of fruits and malts. Would like a bit less sweetness.
