On-tap at Gourmet Pizza Shoppe in Redlands, CA. On to the beer:

It is amber in color, but mixed with the colors of brown and orange. The beer has good head retention, and leaves a little lacing on the glass. Its aroma is a thing of sweetness. Initially there is some dry, dark bread, but after that it is a rush toffee, caramel, unsweetened chocolate, fudge. It's almost like a candy shop.

Nice flavor as well. Toffee, fudge, nouget, nuts, nutty. The most surprising aspect for me was the amount of hops in this beer. Not a shitload of hops, but it is very noticable in this usually low-hopped style. The hops add a dimension of citrus and orange (plus bitterenss), especially towards the end of the sip. Soft bubbles in the mouth.

Altbier is a rare style to find among US microbrewers, so it is nice to see one done by one of my local ones. More important is it tastes good. Recommended.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #73 (Feb 2013):

Not the cleanest Altbier but it does have all of the bells and whistles of one. Not exaclty a beer style that brewers are lining up to do and one that does take a bit more care being the spectrum or character of the beer is pretty narrow. Hangar 24 lands well within the style, a good choice if you are looking to brush up on the German Styles.

On Tap

Eureka! Burger
Redlands, CA

Clear and dark amber, bordering on brown. Thin off-white head. Some lacing down the glass.

Sweet, bready aroma. Little to no hop presence. There's a touch of toffee which is very nice.

Simple altbier. Caramel notes and a touch of toffee sweetness, but relatively simple and one-note, though tasty.

Medium to light bodied. Easy to drink. Pairs well with food.

A simple, malty altbier. Some caramel and toffee sweetness, but not a huge amount of character. Good with a delicious burger.

Extra from Cavery

Pours a nice rich mahogany with a thin off white head that recedes into a thin layer on the beer. The aroma is really nice. Lots of toasty, bready notes balanced with some caramel sweetness. I get some apple/pear fruitiness on the nose but again none of it is overpowering. Taste is more of the same with a good amount of hop bitterness to balance the roast and the sweet. Mouthfeel was fine, didn't detract from the beer but felt appropriate. Overall this is a really nice, well balanced beer. It has depth but is not overly complex. The flavors are sticking in my mouth and leaving me with a really nice aftertaste, this beer just keeps on giving. I will definitely seek this one out again.

Pours a dark amber color with a tight, off-white head that leaves little bits of lacing.

Smells of toasted malts with a bit of dark fruits.

Tastes of the toasted malts, dark fruits, and a bit of earthy hops. Toasted malts lead off with notes of toffee, chocolate, toasted bread, and a bit of caramel. A bit of nuttiness comes through before some figs and raisins. Toasted notes give way to some earthy and grassy hops. Fairly sweet overall. Finishes with a bit of toasted malt.

Mouthfeel is medium-light with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is pretty tasty with a nice combination of fruits and malts. Would like a bit less sweetness.
