A - One-inch whitish head fades fairly quickly but leaves a light floating layer. Pour is a reddish copper, great deep color yet great clarity.

S - Earthy malts and slight hop bitterness. Hints of yeast and biscuits. Also a mild sweet note that interweaves with the hops.

T - A mildly spicy, dry hopsiness predominates the body with some slighty sweet & grassy malt foundation. Distant molasses notes, but the sweetness is so integrated that it's hard to really tease apart the flavors. The finish is where this brew really leaves you wanting more: a lingering oaty, biscuit flavor makes you feel like you can see the mash. Some brown sugar sweetness also lingers with that light hop bite.

M - Lightly carbonated, it keeps the beer lively while feeling substantial. Not too slick, but not heavy either. Well balanced.

D - A great brew, goes great with almost any food and has enough character to stand well on its own. The unique balance of maltiness and sweet hop bite will bring you back for another pint.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #73 (Feb 2013):

Not the cleanest Altbier but it does have all of the bells and whistles of one. Not exaclty a beer style that brewers are lining up to do and one that does take a bit more care being the spectrum or character of the beer is pretty narrow. Hangar 24 lands well within the style, a good choice if you are looking to brush up on the German Styles.

Eureka! Burger
Redlands, CA

Clear and dark amber, bordering on brown. Thin off-white head. Some lacing down the glass.

Sweet, bready aroma. Little to no hop presence. There's a touch of toffee which is very nice.

Simple altbier. Caramel notes and a touch of toffee sweetness, but relatively simple and one-note, though tasty.

Medium to light bodied. Easy to drink. Pairs well with food.

A simple, malty altbier. Some caramel and toffee sweetness, but not a huge amount of character. Good with a delicious burger.

Extra from Cavery

Pours a nice rich mahogany with a thin off white head that recedes into a thin layer on the beer. The aroma is really nice. Lots of toasty, bready notes balanced with some caramel sweetness. I get some apple/pear fruitiness on the nose but again none of it is overpowering. Taste is more of the same with a good amount of hop bitterness to balance the roast and the sweet. Mouthfeel was fine, didn't detract from the beer but felt appropriate. Overall this is a really nice, well balanced beer. It has depth but is not overly complex. The flavors are sticking in my mouth and leaving me with a really nice aftertaste, this beer just keeps on giving. I will definitely seek this one out again.

Pours a dark amber color with a tight, off-white head that leaves little bits of lacing.

Smells of toasted malts with a bit of dark fruits.

Tastes of the toasted malts, dark fruits, and a bit of earthy hops. Toasted malts lead off with notes of toffee, chocolate, toasted bread, and a bit of caramel. A bit of nuttiness comes through before some figs and raisins. Toasted notes give way to some earthy and grassy hops. Fairly sweet overall. Finishes with a bit of toasted malt.

Mouthfeel is medium-light with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is pretty tasty with a nice combination of fruits and malts. Would like a bit less sweetness.
