Poured into a Stone Brewing flute glass. Pours a medium orange amber with healthy carbonation. One finger fine white head with lacing. Aroma of citrus hops and light malt. Flavor follows, citrus and pine hops, grapefruit, light caramel malt. Finishes with a decent citrus and hop bite. Flavors well integrated and the hops are nicely supported by the malt. Medium, somewhat creamy bodied. A very good, enjoyable IPA.

Tasted this on-tap at Hangar 24 Brewery. This is a very good IPA. The color is a light copper; very standard in appearance for an IPA. The head maintains itself quite well. The most remarkable attribute of this beer is the smell, and it might be the best beer I've ever had in terms of smell. This guy has a very citrus and hoppy aroma - making for a very inviting smell if you're an IPA fan. The taste is pretty good, not the hoppiest of IPA's, but a very acceptable amount nonetheless. The fruity undertones complement the hops quite well. This beer feels a little lighter than many IPA's, but that is not to say it has less quality. The drinkability is very solid. If you are new to IPA's, or to hoppy beers in general, this is a great beer to start out with.

On tap at the Hangar 24 brewery, served into a clear plastic cup (probably about 12-14oz large).

A- Dark amber, fairly clear, I think it had a certain opaqueness to it though, nice cap of off white foam on top. IPA's that are orange are about as dark as I prefer, when it gets any darker I start to get a little hesitant on what kind of maltiness might be in there.

S- It had an expected hoppy aroma and a freshness about it. Don't really remember what the hop aroma profile was here. I think you could describe it as pungent in quality but not quantity.

T- Berry-ish or juicy hoppiness. The bitterness is there, but I think they little heftier maltiness cuts into some of it. I think I remember there being a slight toastiness to it.

M/D- Fine body, not watery, not slick/oily. A solid IPA I would drink again if I were out there.

On tap at Hangar 24
1/24/11

A - Dark amber in color little bit of white head

S - Piney hops with a light citrus hint - didn't pick up any of the earthiness in this batch

T - Piney, light grapefruit citrus taste - minimal malt though slightly sweet in the finish

M - Tingly, quite a bit of carbonation - prickly on the mouthfeel - a little too march carbonation for my liking

D - A very nice IPA - a little high carbonation-wise off the tap, nice hop flavors, nicely balanced with some sweetness - didn't pick up heavily on the earthy tone though this well reminded me of Green Flash West Coast IPA - the group felt this was better than the DIPA offering from Hangar...

Poured from 22 oz bomber to pint glass 4/18/11

Appearance is a bit murky. Burnt orange with a more orange than normal, three finger head. Lacing is pretty nice, and head retention is strong to the bottom.

Smell is citrus and pine. Quite a nice hop aroma. Some brown sugar malt.

Taste follows the smell pretty well. Piny bitterness and orange zest are strong at first sip. Mid palate is a bit watery, but not in a bad way. Lets the bitterness mellow a bit with a semi-dry finish.

Mouthfeel is nice, but nothing special. Low carbonation and a touch watery.

Overall, a solid, but not extremely special IPA from Hangar 24. It's my first beer from them, but I will be sure to try others. This didn't stand out, but it certainly didn't disappoint.

More on the bitter side, and the alcohol is not well hidden. The appearance is more on the clear side, with little malt to provide the balance I crave in an IPA. Overall a drinkable, session IPA that is definitely better on tap than in the bottle. The double IPA, in my opinion, is a better offering from H24, but still not a bad beer.

From bottle to pint

Pours a golden-tan with reddish hues and forms a surprisingly frothy, 1-inch head, receding as expected. It smells floral and fruity, a mix of leafy hops and orange. A little skunky. Yeasty aspects are muted but linger as a touch of grainy bread rounds the bouquet.

It tastes surprising light - my bias toward typical California IPA's might be coloring my expectations - but the floral nose fails to deliver an expected hop-bite. A faint funky flavor, almost medicinal, pops up mid-sip and throws off the balance. A little orange zest and earthy grain show through, and there's plenty of malt-sweetness at the finish, but the disjointed flavors will leave discerning palates unsatisfied.

The beer is fairly drinkable - medium-bodied and somewhat refreshing - but unremarkable. It's always nice to see brewers expanding out in their hop-arsenal, but without proper supporting flavors this becomes more gimmick than good beer.

Growler acquired in trade with Hophead22 (thanks!).

Poured a medium orangish/amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of foral hops, pine, and citrus. Tastes of floral hops, citrus, pine, and caramel. Another nicely balanced IPA for sure!

Saw the new bombers on the shelves dubbed Colombus IPA that peaked my interest so I picked one up. After checking the brewery's website looks like this is the same year round IPA offering which I have tried before. But here goes...

A: Appearance is a fuzzy orangish almost pale copper color. Big 'ol 3 finger tan head and massive curtains of lace.

S: Danky aromas of spicy citrus and herbals. Some slight bready notes come through in the background.

T: Flavors are heavy with peppery herb and spice hop character with some bursts of bright citrus notes throughout. A nice chewy sweet malt profile with some destinctable bready cracker character. Definitely resinous and sticks to the throat. ABV is picked up in the end and on exhalation.

M: Sticky-icky smooth with some definite hop astringency that puckers out the palate.

D: A pretty big IPA as far as flavor profile. Drinkability was pretty good but there is some definite hop bitterness that sticks to the throat and may come off a bit harsh to others I would think.

I guess you can't fault a single-hop brew for being sort of one note!?! lol Actually I did enjoy this IPA quite a bit and as a homebrewer that likes using Colombus in my recipes it has also provided a bit of an educational experience. I was expecting way more citrus influence here but the result to me was more that of peppery floral and spice hop character. Personally I would have liked to see the malt character toned down a little bit to really let the hop profile come through but perhaps the Colombus is just too much Alpha for that. Good show!

On tap at Tony's Darts Away and Bluepalms Brewhouse in CA

Weed beer. That's the defining characteristic of Hangar 24's IPA. I put this beer in front of people and I say "Smell this and tell me the first thing that comes to mind." And 9 times out of 10 its "Marijuana". This is a true cannibanoid IPA, which i think should be a subset of the IPA category. When the plant matter is so strong, and the floral aromas so intense, you cannot help but compare it to that other really well known herb. Fortunately this is also a great tasting IPA that goes well with spicy food or solo. Try it with a burger that has some hatch chiles on it and try to say it doesn't complement. I dare you. I find it to be a very drinkable beer as well, and would easily do a couple of these in a night. As it warms up, it loses some of that initial bite, and it goes from chugging beer to sipping, which i enjoy.

Grower fill from H 24.

A: Wonderful copper color. Lighter then a lot of IPAs but not much.

S: Hops. Its a single hop IPA so its a good way to see Columbus hops in action. A good comparison would be one of Mikkeler's single hops.

T: Malty, a little vegetative hops. Pine, and earthy flavors. A little one dimensional. A little more hop varieties could add some more depth.

M: Good. Not watery or thick. Missing something though.

D: Close to 8% abv. Could easy floor you. Not a session but pretty drinkable.

A very decent IPA but could use a bit of work.

On-tap at Bruery Provisions

A: The pour is a vibrant orange color with a big head that is just slightly off-white.

S: An incredibly dank hop aroma to this beer. Big citrus and pine notes with a slight herbal quality to it. A mild malt sweetness consisting primarily of bread.

T: The flavor is somewhat sweet and does not have quite as big of a hop punch as the nose. Some citrus and fruit hop notes and a solid pine character which gives the beer a strong bitterness.

M: Medium in body body and carbonation.

O: Good but not great, unfortunately. With some fine tuning, though, I think this one has potential.

Bottle to Tulip
22 oz.

App- An orangey amber with yellow highlights and a two finger head with lots of cling to it.

Smell- Very big aromatics with a deep pine, resin and a couple day old ground fruit rind.

Taste- Tastes follows the nose with the single columbus and dry hopping. A lot of pine and some hoppy resin and was quite a bit bitter.

Mouth- Medium bodied with a medium aftertaste and a lot of resin on the after taste.

Drink- Not a bad single IPA by any means. I think for me I am not familiar with the columbus besides the one columbus IPA I had to really be wow'd by this one.

Thank you, Andy. A beer from the IE? Sign me up!

Pouring a surprisingly deep amber-copper with a dense, creamy, beige head that leaves plenty of lacing, this is a great looking IPA. The nose is rather pungently hoppy, rather green with a little bit of chlorphyll present. Minty, herbaceous, and mildly malty with a little bit of caramel, this is a pretty decent IPA. The palate opens with a pleasing bitterness, mildly pungent and definitely minty with some pine and grapefruit present. While leaning more towards the bitterness, there's pretty decent flavor as well. This is where the mint and the herbal character really come through. Medium-light in body with some sweetness, there's a little caramel present, along with some toffee/burnt sugar like character. The carbonation is soft and creamy, making this quite pleasant on the palate. All told, a pretty solid IPA, one that can be improved reasonably easily. I'd definitely drink this again.

Served from a growler purchased from Hanger 24. Friend brought it to our party.

A: Very dark, hazy amber. This is unlike your normal IPA. Looks more like an amber ale.

S: Smell of hops, sweet hops.

T: I was pleasantly surprised by this IPA. It was a very well balanced beer between the hops and the malt. But yet, at the end, the hops left a nice bitter taste at the end. Great beer.

M: Nice and smooth, but a little creamier than your average IPA.

D: Easy to drink. Could've had more than the two servings I had.

Overall: an exceptional brew that if you get the chance, taste it. You won't be disappointed.

Pours a muddy reddish tinged amber with a neat finger and a half of foam that holds on nicely leaving sticky curtains. Nose is grainy with some blood orange and almost a bit of slightly rye wheat bread. I can smell the hops but dont perceive their scent to be anything but bitterness. Taste is borderline burnt bread, some piney hops and maybe some slight citrus pith, very simplistic. Not bad but other ipas at around 7% abv really blow this one away.
