On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

A dark brown porter with ruby highlights at the edges. The most incredible lacing shines down the glass. Leaves the glass sticky and messy. Looks rich and decadent.

Roasted malts on the nose. Smells like a roasty and robust porter, though I don't get much chocolate aroma.

There's certainly more chocolate in the flavor and it's actually really nice. Balanced, sweet, bitter, roasted malts, chocolate--very good.

Medium bodied. Ample carbonation.

A tasty yet unaromatic porter. This beer has a decidedly nice chocolate character. I enjoyed it a lot and it made for a wonderful dessert.

Medium brown color with tawny hues. 1-finger tan head with very short retention.

Hot chocolate, vanilla, roasted barley, Hershey's chocolate syrup and a light coffee note. Some sense of sweetness in the aromas, but not excessive.

On the palate, cappacino, vanilla, mocha and a mild asprin bitterness on the back of the palate.

Medium bodied and fairly dry in style for the flavors. Pretty good attenuation in the beer. Finish is fairly short and and carries bitterness and astringency that remind of cold coffee.

Like the idea, but the beer lacks synergy.

Poured from 22oz bottle.

Overall, this is a perfectly average porter, but did not have much that is going to get me to come back and have this beer again.

The beer pours medium to dark brown, with a tanish head, visually appealing and a good start.

The smell is overall earthy, with hints of chocolate, with malt and a bit of copper, so pretty much an earthy porter.

The taste is what you would expect from a smokey porter, with hits of chocolate, and something creamy in the mix. It is simple but I enjoyed the experience. It also had a nice feel to it, but that was not enough to make me want to come back for more.

Appearance - Pours a deep, dark near black auburn brown with a light, brownish off-white 2 finger head. Great retention, leaving a strong layer of microbubbles floating on the surface. Moderate lacing on the glass.

Smell - Not strongly aromatic; touches on chocolatey roasted malt and a buttery character.

Taste - Not what was expected. More off-flavored butter flavor than chocolate. Chocolate is present, but moderate at best. Acidic bite. Moderate roast near the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full in body with low to moderate carbonation. Acidic. Fair smoothness.

Overall - When drinking this, the first thing that comes to mind is neither chocolate, nor porter; not good when the name of your brew is 'Chocolate Porter'. I'm one and done with this beer. There are dozens upon dozens of chocolate forward brews I'd much rather have.

Black body with a little white head. Chocolate and vanilla powder aroma. Dry serviceable porter. A sipper as it is well dry and has a bitter chocolate as the key taste. Some coffee. Bit above average mouthfeel. My bottle, brought back from top of the year LA trip.

Pours a finger and half of head on a black body.
The aroma has some roasted malt and dark chocolate. It's a little on the faint side though.
The taste starts with some chocolate sweetness, then some mild bitterness, moves to roasted malt and bitter chocolate finish. Nice profile and well balanced.
The texture is pretty smooth with low carbonation.

On tap at The Bruery Annaversary Party. 4oz taster. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a dark brown almost mahogany color. Thin light tan head. Ok lacing.

Aroma is kinda fake chocolate smelling like hersheys chocolate syrup. Little bit of roast.

Taste is a roasty tasty porter. Little bit of chocolate that's not fake like the aroma. Smooth with a nice roasty bite.

Mouthfeel is a little high on the carbonation but pretty smooth.

Overall a tasty porter. I would buy it if it was in 6 packs.

Appearance- I knew this was a dark beer going into it, and once I poured it I wasn't disappointed. I held it up to the light and saw very little light shining through.

Smell - I picked up milk chocolate and maybe some hints of dark chocolate.

Taste - I like the taste of this 22 oz. bottled version, but I prefer the taste of the nitro version on tap at the Hangar 24 Brewery in Redlands, CA. They're both good, but the nitro version is much creamier and goes down smoother which, in my opinion, makes the nitro version on tap much better (Believe me, it's worth a trip to the Hangar 24 Brewery to try the nitro verison). Both have a distinct milk chocolatey taste with some mild bitterness but overall the nitro version is less bitter, even when it sits awhile and gets warmer.

Mouthfeel - The carbonation is much more present in the bottled version. As I said above, the nitro version is smoother and creamier. Both are good, but the nitro version goes down smoother for me.

Overall - I would choose the nitro version overall. Or, if Hangar 24 ever comes out with a nitro can or nitro bottle version, then I'd gladly buy a bunch of those and drink that. Some might read this and say, "Oh, c'mon... Guiness already has a nitro can and a nitro bottle." To that statement I would respond, "Yes, but Guiness is not 8% ABV."

I live in West Los Angeles, so Redlands is quite a drive for me. But in the meantime, until my next one-and-a-half hour drive out to Redlands, I'll probably continue to pick up some bottles of Hangar 24 Chocolate Porter (but I really hope they read this review and make some Chocolate Porter in nitro cans or nitro bottles). Enjoy, everybody!

A- pours a nearly opaque black with a big creamy off-white head that has good retention and eventually leaves some sticky lace behind

S- chocolaty malt with some fruity esters, candied sugar and cocoa

T- lightly roasted chocolate malt, some fruity flavors and a dry finish. Not really getting as much chocolate as I expected, due to the name of the beer

M- Medium body and carbonation leads to a super creamy mouthfeel with a smooth finish, ABV is hidden very well

O- A middle of the pack porter that seems to be lacking the chocolate that it's name entails. Wouldn't pick it again
