Thanks to Kyle2k10 for this bottle, the last remaining bottle from a dangerous wintertime swap. 750ML, corked & caged from 2013, bottle 2021 of 2520, split with my wife.

The pour is dark brown with red-headed highlights & carbonation that could be measured in fingernail widths; i.e. less than one. Dat nose rings out with a strong bourbon forefront, backed by cola & chocolate (which surfaces only after a vigorous swirl). Vanilla, wood have to be teased out. I like the direction this is running.

Immelman Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter (Barrel Roll Series #1) would receive a performance review of "exceeds expectations" in my department. The bourbon has Klumesque legs: strong up front & seem to go on forever. The barrel lends a throaty heat, vanilla, & strong woodiness in the after-burn. Under the staves is a beer...I think. The chocolate is subdued, mild sweetness tangling with black sugar. A bit heavy; could use an infusion of bubbles. But not having any trouble making it disappear. Call me Copperfield, sonny.

A barrel-heavy porter (at least that's what it says on the bottle) that uses the bourbon & wood notes so well that the quiet loss of the base beer is forgivable. Given a more robust porter, I do believe this could swagger with the big boys. As is: a very good beer.

Bottle pour at Woodshop 8 held at The Hermosillo in Los Angeles, CA.

2013 vintage. Bottle # 87/2520.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, bourbon, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and bourbon flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness and an alcohol kick on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a nice balance between the cocoa and bourbon qualities.
