Draft at KnB Wine Cellar in San Diego, CA. March, 2013.

Pitch black and opaque with a two finger dark beige head that has good retention, slowly fading onto a thick, lasting ring.  Spotty lacing left behind.

Spicy bourbon barrel aroma but it's nicely integrated into notes of the base beer.  Strong bourbon and burnt oak presence along with some vanilla and toasted coconut.  Still plenty of roast underneath the strong barrel character with hints of dark chocolate, toast, burnt sugar and coffee bean along with booze and sweeter malt notes.

On the fuller end of medium body and slightly viscous with a blast of spicy, boozy heat.  Tons of bourbon flavor pounding you over the head along with dry toasted oak and subtle vanilla bean.  Lots of bourbon heat, almost too much so, dominating and overpowering the other flavors.  Tastes too young for my liking.  After the palate adjusts, there's a nice sweet malt presence along with some subtle roast with hints of dark chocolate, caramel and coffee bean.  Some decent flavors underneath the barrel but it's overwhelmingly boozy and a bit one dimensional.
