"Barleywine style ale aged in rye whiskey and bourbon barrels." 2013 vintage. 12.4% ABV according to my bottle. 1 pint 9.4 fl oz brown glass bottle with interesting label art and hood-and-wire cap (aka cage) over a cork acquired at a local SoCal bottle shop and served into a flared stem-snifter/tulip hybrid in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average; I like the brewery but wasn't a big fan of Pugachev's Cobra. Bottle #3905 out of 8282.

Served cold - straight from me fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a one finger wide head of light khaki colour. Nice thickness and creaminess. Retention is average - about 2 minutes. Light lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

Body colour is a murky dull nontransparent dark brown. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Low vibrance.

Not much to look at, but I'm optimistic.

Sm: Vanilla, bourbon, a bit of wood. Not much rich toasty oak. No spicy whiskey. Brown malts. Biscuit malts. Toffee. Caramel. Cream. No yeast character, hop character, or booze. A mild strength aroma. Not very evocative - especially considering the style.

T: Caramel, toffee. A bit of vanilla. The bourbon isn't particularly evocative; just some vanilla. No toasty oak or anything interesting. The whiskey is similarly boring; no spiciness or anything of interest. Brown malts. No yeast character or hop character comes through. Some alcohol, definitely. A bit of cream. Vague hints of buried dark fruit. Largely imbalanced. Not much complexity or subtlety here. Kind of a mess. I like elements of it, but it's not gestalt or particularly cohesive.

Flavour intensity is above average. Flavour duration and depth are average.

I don't notice any off-flavours.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Lightly creamy up front. Somewhat overcarbonated. Alcohol has a warm presence. Suits the flavour profile only generally; doesn't come off custom-tailored to it. Thick. Not syrupy, fortunately.

Dr: Drinkable and enjoyable, but I definitely wouldn't get it again and it'll take effort to kill this bottle alone. A largely forgettable barleywine from Hangar 24. Not sure the bourbon and whiskey aging really did much. Wouldn't recommend it to friends. It'll get you drunk...

A - Pours a cloudy amber in color with a very light tan head. Faint lacing around the glass.

S - Sweetness up front of caramel, brown sugar and vanilla. It's not overpowering but a great compliment to the bourbon that follows. It may just be me, but when the beer warms the rye whiskey spice comes forward with some oak.

T - Oak and bourbon that's followed by vanilla. The sweet (caramel & brown sugar) flavors in the smell are present but not as noticeable. I'm not getting the hops as others have noted?? Really complex flavors as it warms.

M - On the light side of medium bodied with a fair amount of carbonation.

O - I'd buy again and should have bought two so I could put one down. This is a pretty good beer that some thought went into.
