Love the style when done right, don't love the brewery. Acquired for $7.49 at a local SoCal bottle shop. "Belgian style dubbel brewed with dates." 7% ABV confirmed. Label art is uninspired. 22 fl oz brown glass bottle with pry-off branded pressure cap served into a Mitchells of Lancaster flared stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average.
Served chilled and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
A: Pours a half finger head - quite thin - of grey-khaki colour. (Ecru for the pretentious). Recedes to a floater ring within about 20 seconds; retention is awful. No creaminess.
No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.
Body colour is a murky glowing amber. Translucent; nontransparent. Lacks vibrance, but it's fairly appealing for the style.
Far from the best I've seen in the style, but it's more or less to style. Looking forward to trying it. Not unique or special, but no overt flaws are immediately evident.
Sm: Love the subtle dark fruits here; I get sugarplum and fig. Maybe dark cherry. I'm looking for dates, but they aren't coming through - at least not in a distinctive sense. The dark fruit notes do mesh together substantially, so it's possible the date notes are buried in there.
Unrefined sugars. Bready malts. Caramel. Biscuit malt. Raisin.
No yeast character is detectable. Some alcohol does come through, but it's not a boozy or hot aroma.
On the sweeter end. No real hop character is present in the aroma; I imagine any hopping was purely preservative.
Right on the money for the style, but it lacks the depth, complexity, and subtlety of the best beers in the style. I like what I'm detecting, and I hope the taste is as balanced as the aroma suggests.
T/Mf: Has an even malty body with bready malts, some caramalt, and a bit of biscuit malt. Candi sugar sweetens it a bit, infringing on the otherwise enjoyable dryness. The dark fruits are nicely complementary; I get light sugarplum, dominant raisin, and a bit of fig. Dates aren't ringing distinct; I have trouble finding any date notes. Maybe I just don't eat dates enough. Some unrefined sugars lend it a bit of body, and I do get a cherry-like injection of flavour on the climax which works well here. Fairly balanced, though it's too sweet and some light hints of alcohol do creep in. Straightforward and simple for the style, without any additional complexity or subtlety. The dark fruits don't feel fully natural; I suspect some sort of extract or preserves were used. A little more fermentation would make the fruity notes come more to life and darken to match the better beers in the style more precisely; it'd also remove some of that unwelcome sweetness.
The best beers in the style have a careful dryness and coarseness. This is smooth and wet. Overcarbonated as well; bottle conditioning would greatly benefit this. Suits the flavour profile decently. Good thickness, but better dubbels are much more delicate and fragile. The texture certainly doesn't come off as though custom-tailored to the flavour profile. Passable overall, but it needs work. Decent presence on the palate.
Dr: A drinkable dubbel with lots of room for improvement. Not getting the dates promised by the label either; I assert they used date preserves which resulted in the indistinct dark fruits that actually manifested. It's pricey for its lack of quality. I wouldn't get it again, especially with Rochefort 8 out there for less. I wouldn't recommend this to friends. Doesn't hide its ABV as well as it should.

This does have a little more yeasty flavor than many Dubbels. It's also less sweet. More watery body than typical of the style, but it's pleasing and refreshing here. Clear dark amber in the Saxo tall tulip. Attractive foam that lasts well and lots of lacing. A scratchy hoppy note along with the drying effect of the Belgian yeast. The dates are just part of the complexity and add a little fruitiness without standing out. Pleasing maltiness.
Nicely sudsy in the mouth. Another attractive label from Hangar 24, and another interesting beer from a brewery that seems to be getting its act together. Thoroughly drinkable with the restrained sugars. From the 22 oz bottle bought at Barons Marketplace on Point Loma Blvd.
