A quick comment on the bottle itself, because it is worth noting. This bottle is "upside down". The label is attached upside down, and then wax is applied to the bottom of the bottle to complete the illusion.

For me, this was a pretty good sour. The smells and tastes of a typical sour were all there. There was a berry flavor, but I couldn't really tell which one. This bottle was shared amongst 4 of us and the opinions were quite polarized. 2 people couldn't finish their share(one thinking it was infected). I enjoyed my share, and the 4th downed the rest of the bottle.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Dark orange. Hazy. Small white head.

Smell - Acetic acid sourness. Berry fruitiness. Lightly grainy.

Taste - Pretty sour. Strawberry, cranberry. Bretty. Stone fruits. A little grainy.

Mouthfeel - Medium high carbonation. Medium light body.

Overall - Nice fruitiness. Acetic sourness doesn't overwhelm. Nice.

BEER REVIEW #600!!

Reviewing Snozzberry, a mysteriously fruited wild ale from Block 15 out of Corvallis, Oregon.

Score: 94

April 2014 vintage bottle served in a footed De Garde tulip and enjoyed on 06/04/14.

Appearance: Pours a murky, slightly pinkish peach color with minimal head that totally settles off the pour. No lacing or retention. 3/5

Smell: Raspberry, hay, strawberry, mango, berry, oak and musty peach/nectarine. Really interesting mix of fruitiness with a young funk character that is very bright and slightly sweet. Super complex and funky fruit roll-up-esque. 4.75/5

Taste: Strawberry upfront and in the finish with a nice raspberry flavor in the middle. Some lingering plastic-like flavor in the finish. Super fruity. 4.25/5

Mouthfeel: Very juicy mouthfeel with a dry finish. Good tartness throughout. Light bodied, appropriate carbonation. Nice mix of sweet and sour fruit characteristics here. 4.5/5

Overall: A really tasty fruit-blast of a sour ale that would be legitimately excellent but for the plastic character in the finish.

Cost: $9.50 for a 375 ml bottle.

Recently sampled at a bottle share over at 16 tons.

The beer pours a slightly hazy, pinkish amber color with pretty good head retention and light lacing. At least to me, the aroma was the best and most interesting aspect of this beer, as I picked up something of a Hawaiian punch, lightly soapy, sweet tart aroma. You can tell the beer will have a sour component, but at least on the nose, the sour component isn't overwhelming. Otherwise, I thought this beer odd to say the least, but not bad. The flavor profile replicated the nose to some extent, but the sour component really seemed to dominate the flavor profile. It literally was almost all I picked up in terms of flavor. The beer was fairly light on the palate otherwise, and so I was surprised by the 8.25% abv. The alcohol level was nearly undetectable in this beer. An interesting beer, and one I was glad to be able to try again.

It's beers like this that really convince me that I "don't get it" when it comes to sours. While I thought this a pleasant, interesting beer, some of the review scores I see for this beer are flat out incomprehensible. The appeal of this beer is a complete mystery to me.

Bottle opened on 4.27.14

A - Pours a fizzy pinkish-red with a bubbly white head that is gone instantly.

S - Very fruity, raspberry, strawberry, nice.

T - Strawberry, raspberry, peach, tart and oaky.

D - Light body with a fizzy carbonation.

O - Good fruitiness, and solid tartness. Good stuff.

Thanks Kelton!
